PEG-asparaginase treatment  regimens for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in children: a network meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We were not able to conduct a network meta-analysis, and could not draw clear conclusions because it was not possible to rank the interventions. Overall, we found that different numbers of doses of PEG-asparaginase probably result in little to no difference in event-free survival across all studies. In two studies, we found that a higher number of PEG-asparaginase doses probably increases pancreatitis and asparaginase-associated toxicities.PMID:37260073 | PMC:PMC10230854 | DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD014570.pub2

Diagnosis and management of a peripheral T-cell lymphoproliferative disease in an American pine marten < em > (Martes americana) < /em >
This report describes the diagnosis and management of a peripheral T-cell lymphoproliferative disease, presumably peripheral lymphoma, in an American pine marten (Martes americana). This is the first report of this disease and its successful treatment in a pine marten.PMID:37138708 | PMC:PMC10150559

Firefighting and Cancer: A Meta-analysis of Cohort Studies in the Context of Cancer Hazard Identification
CONCLUSIONS: There is epidemiological evidence to support a causal relationship between occupational exposure as a firefighter and certain cancers. Challenges persist in the body of evidence related to the quality of exposure assessment, confounding, and medical surveillance bias.PMID:37389311 | PMC:PMC10300491 | DOI:10.1016/j.shaw.2023.02.003

Epidemiologic studies of glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma: A review with consideration of exposure frequency, systemic dose, and study quality
Glob Epidemiol. 2023 Feb 25;5:100101. doi: 10.1016/j.gloepi.2023.100101. eCollection 2023 Dec.ABSTRACTI reviewed the epidemiologic literature for glyphosate and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in the context of the frequency of exposure in each epidemiologic study, systemic dose from biomonitoring studies of applicators, and aspects of study quality. Nine studies were identified, 7 case control and 2 cohort, by a literature search and a review of reference lists from published studies and recent regulatory evaluations. All but one study involved exposure scenarios that were so infrequent that they are not credible for cancer ...

Severe strongyloidiasis: a systematic review of case reports
Conclusions: Proper screening (which must include serology) is mandatory in high - risk patients, for instance candidates to immunosuppressive medications, currently or previously living in endemic countries. In some cases, presumptive treatment might be justified. Ivermectin is the gold standard for treatment, although the optimal dosage is not clearly defined in case of HS/DS.

Post-transplantation lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) localized in the central nervous system: report from an international survey on PTLD.
This study showed that PTLD patients who had CNS presentation have quite a comparable outcome compared with those with other areas of localization. However, further prospective studies are needed for reaffirming our findings. PMID: 23538344 [PubMed - in process]

High-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous stem cell transplantation for patients with relapsed/refractory Hodgkin lymphoma.
CONCLUSIONS: The currently available evidence suggests a PFS benefit for patients with relapsed or refractory HL after first-line therapy, who are treated with HDCT followed by ASCT compared to patients treated with conventional chemotherapy. In addition, data showes a positive trend regarding OS, but more trials are needed to detect a significant effect.Intensifying the HDCT regime before HDCT followed by ASCT did not show a difference as compared to HDCT followed by ASCT, but was associated with increased adverse events. Antibiotic therapy in nongastrointestinal MALT lymphoma: a review of the literature
Although antibiotic therapy has been established as the standard of care in patients with gastric mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma, much less is known about the value of antibiotic therapy in nongastrointestinal (non-GI) MALT lymphomas. A computerized search (Medline) accompanied by a manual search to identify clinical reports on the topic of antibacterial therapy in patients with non-GI MALT lymphomas was performed. The majority of data were available for MALT lymphoma of the ocular adnexa (OAML) including a total of 131 patients in 4 retrospective studies, 3 prospective series (including 81 patients), an...

Allogeneic stem cell transplantation versus conventional therapy for advanced primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma.
CONCLUSIONS: We planned to report evidence from genetically or non-genetically randomised controlled trials comparing conventional therapy and allogeneic stem cell transplantation. However, we did not identify any randomised controlled trials addressing this question. Nevertheless, prospective genetically randomised controlled trials need to be initiated to evaluate the precise role of alloSCT in advanced CTCL. PMID: 23986525 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Perceived need for information of patients with haematological malignancies: a literature review.
CONCLUSION: Based on the limited number of data available, medical information is for patients of higher priority compared to psychosocial information. Patients need basic information on diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and all other topics. Need for detailed information varied between studies. Patients were satisfied with the provided information, preferably offered by doctors and nurses. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: The perceived need for information and satisfaction with the information provided differs strongly between patients. In clinical practice, more attention is needed for information tailored to the patie...

The role of additional radiotherapy for primary central nervous system lymphoma.
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the currently available evidence (one RCT) is not sufficient to conclude that WBR plus chemotherapy and chemotherapy alone have similar effects on overall survival in people with PCNSL. The findings suggest that the addition of radiotherapy (WBR) to chemotherapy may increase progression-free survival, but may also increase the incidence of neurotoxicity compared to chemotherapy only (methotrexate monotherapy). As the role of chemoradiotherapy in the treatment of PCNSL remains unclear, further prospective, randomised trials are needed before definitive conclusions can be drawn. PMID: 24931518 [...

Can Gingko and Turmeric Help Stop Ebola?
Summary There is no known pharmaceutical currently available that specifically treats Ebola disease. One treatment modality that should be considered is the use of herbal medicines, which have both centuries old anecdotal success as well as recent modern biochemical and formal research rationales for their use. Five areas of action that could be addressed by the herbal medicines as it relates to Ebola would be: VP24/immune system evasion GP protein/replicatio; herbal strategies effective against similar hemorrhagic disease beneficial modulation of patient immune and inflammatory response systems prophylactic use for heal...

Cytomorphological features of ALK‐positive lung adenocarcinomas: Psammoma bodies and signet ring cells
CONCLUSIONSSalient features, including signet ring cells and psammoma bodies, were found to be significantly associated with ALK(+) lung adenocarcinomas and are identifiable on CP specimens. Recognizing these may be especially helpful in the molecular triage of scant CP samples. Cancer (Cancer Cytopathol) 2014. © 2014 American Cancer Society.
