Immunological Molecular Responses of Human Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells to Infection With Toxoplasma gondii
We present a transcriptomic view of the epithelial cell response to infection with T. gondii. RNA-Sequencing of total and small RNA extracted from three human primary retinal pigment epithelial isolates infected with virulent, natural GT-1 strain tachyzoites enabled in silico differential expression, and gene ontology, pathway and network enrichment analyses. Our work revealed a sizeable molecular response in the total RNA transcriptome—with significantly differentially expressed genes totaling 28.9% of total assigned transcripts—but very limited consistent changes in the small RNA transcriptome—tot...

The Cerebrospinal Fluid in Multiple Sclerosis
Conclusions OCB are important biomarkers that can support MRI diagnostics and help to avoid false-positive MS diagnoses. Therefore, the revised McDonalds criteria have increased the importance of the OCB. New biomarkers such as AQP4 have now established themselves in clinical practice, and others such as Anti-MOG and NfL are about to enter clinical routine. An important focus in the search for new biomarkers is the monitoring of therapy efficacy and the prediction of severe side effects. Many other CSF molecules such as CHI3L1, IL-6, or CXCL13 show potential as markers for clinical practice, but further research is nee...

Atypical presentations of cutaneous leishmaniasis: a systematic review.
ATYPICAL PRESENTATIONS OF CUTANEOUS LEISHMANIASIS: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW. Acta Trop. 2017 May 16;: Authors: Meireles CB, Maia LC, Soares GC, Teodoro IPP, do Socorro Vieira Gadelha M, da Silva CGL, de Lima MAP Abstract Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in 88 countries, showing relevant prevalences. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review on atypical lesions of CL around the world, addressing clinico-epidemiological, immunological and therapeutic aspects. A search of the literature was conducted via electronic databases Scopus and PubMed for articles published between 2010 and 2015....

From “Serum Sickness” to “Xenosialitis”: Past, Present, and Future Significance of the Non-human Sialic Acid Neu5Gc
Conclusions and Perspectives In this review, we have discussed important milestones from the early description of “Serum-sickness” as being due to antibodies directed against Neu5Gc epitopes all the way to the present-day therapeutic implications of these antibodies in cancer therapy. Some of these milestones have been represented in a concise timeline (Figure 6). While the “Xenosialitis” hypothesis is well-supported in the human-like mouse models, it has yet to be conclusively proven in humans. It remains to be seen if “Xenosialitis” plays a role in other uniquely-human dis...

Potent Inhibition of Zika Virus Replication by Aurintricarboxylic Acid
In this study, we evaluated ATA as a potential antiviral drug against ZIKV replication. The antiviral activity of ATA against ZIKV replication in vitro showed median inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 13.87 ± 1.09 μM and 33.33 ± 1.13 μM in Vero and A549 cells, respectively; without showing any cytotoxic effect in both cell lines (median cytotoxic concentration (CC50)> 1,000 μM). Moreover, ATA protected both cell types from ZIKV-induced cytopathic effect (CPE) and apoptosis in a time- and concentration-dependent manner. In addition, pre-treatment of Vero cells with ATA for up to 72 h also...

New Insights into Ocular Complications of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection
Curr HIV Res. 2021 Aug 12. doi: 10.2174/1570162X19666210812113137. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHIV/AIDS continues to be a major global public health issue, affecting multiple organs such as the eyes. With the advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), the incidence has dropped but HIV ocular complications still remain a major cause of vision impairment in HIV-positive individuals. Since modern medical interventions nowadays can change this previously fatal infection into a chronic disease and enable people living with HIV for relatively long and healthy lives, recent studies update the incidence of HIV-relat...
