Critical appraisal of oral squamous cell carcinoma management —a case report
Squamous cell carcinoma is the most frequent oral malignant neoplasm. Early diagnosis is key in successful treatment of this neoplasia. The aims of this study are to report a case of an aggressive squamous cell carcinoma, to discuss the factors involved in the late diagnosis of an advanced lesion, and to make a critical appraisal of the Brazilian health system and the difficulties found in referring these patients. A male patient, 50 years of age with a history of chronic alcoholism and tobacco use, presented with a proliferative ulcer with an indurated, raised margin, involving the left palate, the lower gingiva, and the ...

Demographic characteristics of patients with actinic cheilitis in labial mucosa diagnosed in 2 oncologic care centers
ConclusionsThe use of sunscreen was effective in the prevention of squamous cell carcinoma in lip, and the absent of follow-up care in patients with actinic cheilitis can influence the rates of malignization to squamous cell carcinoma, because the patients does not change the habits and the dentist cannot identify earlier the malignization of actinic cheilitis.

Smartphone-based telemedicine service at palliative care unit during nationwide lockdown: Our initial experience at a tertiary care cancer hospital
Conclusion: Telemedicine is the future of health-care delivery systems. In PC, we deal with immunocompromised debilitated cancer patients and telemedicine is immensely helpful for us to provide holistic integrated care to these patients who are unable to visit hospitals regularly.

Clinical Tolerability and Safety of Tramadol in Hospitalized Patients.
Authors: Mohan N, Edmonds KP, Ajayi TA, Atayee RS Abstract Tramadol is a schedule IV, monoaminergic and μ-opioid-receptor analgesic with unique pharmacology properties. Though it is well established and widely utilized, there is little guidance on tramadol's place in therapy, including tolerability, safety and monitoring guidelines. Retrospective chart review of 250 patients who received oral tramadol during their hospitalization from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018. Of the 250 patients, 10.8% had cancer as their primary diagnosis while 8.8% were admitted for hematologic reasons. 79.1% of patients had acute p...

Critical Role of PET in Assessing Head and Neck Cancer and Related Disorders
Conclusion: Many studies have looked at the impact of PET on tumor staging, however, there is still more future work to be done to fully characterize the use of PET in head and neck disorders. It is still unclear which quantification methods have the best prognostic utility to predict outcomes. Some retrospective studies have suggested the use of SUVmax, while the PET parameters SUVmean, metabolic tumor volume (MTV), or total lesion glycolysis (TLG) have recently been introduced to show better correlation with prognosis. There is a respectable amount of retrospective literature evaluating PET for staging and diagnosis of H...

Impact of the early phase of the COVID pandemic on cancer treatment delivery and the quality of cancer care: a scoping review and conceptual model
ConclusionsAs it will take a considerable amount of time for the cancer system to resume capacity and adjust models of care in response to the pandemic, these treatment delays and modifications will likely be prolonged and will negatively impact the quality of care and patient outcomes.

Radiofrequency ablation of a large hepatic adenoma in a child
We present a case of large hepatic adenoma successfully treated with RFA in a child with chronic liver disease secondary to alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency. RFA may be an attractive option in pediatric liver tumor management in selected cases because of its less invasive characteristics.

Breast cancer and breast screening: perceptions of Chinese migrant women living in New Zealand.
CONCLUSION: Addressing communication barriers for Chinese migrant women has the potential to raise awareness about breast cancer and breast health, and to increase successful participation in breast cancer screening. Greater efforts are needed to ensure this group has an understanding of, and is engaged with a primary care provider. Such efforts are key to improving health for this growing sector of the New Zealand population. PMID: 24892131 [PubMed - in process]

Guibitang, a traditional herbal medicine, induces apoptotic death in A431 cells by regulating the activities of mitogen-activated protein kinases
Conclusions: We first elucidate that GBT stimulates the apoptotic signaling pathway and suppresses the proliferation of A431 cells via regulating MAPKs signaling pathway. Furthermore, GBT significantly inhibits tumor growth of A431 cells without causing systemic toxicity. Based on our study, GBT could be useful in the management of skin cancer as chemoprevention and chemotherapy remedy.

Abstract SS03-01: Promise and pitfalls of personalized medicine from a clinical science perspective
Personalized medicine tailors treatment to meet an individual patient's needs and specific disease. While the idea of personalized medicine is not new, advances in biomedical science have evolved to target molecular pathways to reduce toxicity and provide more effective treatment options to patients with many common cancers. For a few cancers, such as breast cancer, biomarker assisted diagnoses and therapy have already replaced the standard "one size fits all" treatment. As our understanding of molecular genetics increases we will be able to offer tailored cancer therapy to more patients, however, the cost of cancer care w...
