Anti-Vascular endothelial growth factor therapy impairs endothelial function of retinal microcirculation in colon cancer patients – an observational study
Conclusions Bevacizumab acutely impairs microvascular function independent of blood pressure changes. Imaging of the retinal microcirculation seems a valuable tool for monitoring pharmacodynamic effects of bevacizumab. Trial registration NCT ID: NCT00740168

Brain tumor invasion along blood vessels may lead to new cancer treatments
Invading glioblastoma cells may hijack cerebral blood vessels during early stages of disease progression and damage the brain’s protective barrier, a study in mice indicates. This finding could ultimately lead to new ways to bring about the death of the tumor, as therapies may be able to reach these deadly cells at an earlier time point than was previously thought possible.

Central nervous system involvement in adult patients with invasive infection caused by Streptococcus agalactiae
Conclusions CNS involvement is not uncommon in adult patients with invasive infection caused by S. agalactiae. Isolating S. agalactiae, especially in cases of meningitis, should lead doctors to search for predisposing systemic disease and causes of mucocutaneous barrier disruption.

Clinical Outcomes of Metastatic Intra-cerebral Hemorrhage and Role of Acute Radiotherapy (P3.077)
CONCLUSIONS: Early recognition of metastatic disease as the etiology of ICH is important, particularly when it is the presenting manifestation. Despite the overall poor prognosis of metastatic cancer, early radiotherapy may increase survival and offer quality of life in selected group of patients. Study points to possible treatment for lethal pediatric brain cancer
Using brain tumor samples collected from children in the United States and Europe, an international team of scientists found that the drug panobinostat and similar gene regulating drugs may be effective at treating diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas (DIPG), an aggressive and lethal form of pediatric cancer.

Normal neuronal firing may spark brain tumor growth
Using human brain tumor samples, scientists have discovered that normal patterns of nerve cell firing may enhance the growth of cancer cells. They also found that, neuroligin-3 (NLGN3), a gene known to be important for brain cell communication, may influence tumor growth and patient survival, making it a potential new target for therapy. The study, published in Cell, was partially funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Mortality and comorbidities in patients with multiple sclerosis compared with a population without multiple sclerosis: An observational study using the US department of defense administrative claims database
Conclusions Rates of mortality and several comorbidities are higher in the MS versus non-MS cohort. Early recognition and management of comorbidities may reduce premature mortality and improve quality of life in patients with MS.

Chronic disease and lifestyle factors associated with change in sleep duration among older adults in the Singapore Chinese Health Study
