Increasing SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among UK pediatric patients on dialysis and kidney transplantation between January 2020 and August 2021
ConclusionsAnti-SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was low in 2020 and increased in early 2021. Serological surveillance complements nucleic acid detection and antigen testing to build a greater picture of the epidemiology of COVID-19 and is therefore important to guide public health responses.Graphical abstractA higher resolution version of the Graphical abstract is available asSupplementary information

Nanoparticles: a breakthrough in COVID-19 prevention, diagnosis and treatment
Arch Med Sci. 2021 Oct 15;19(5):1410-1420. doi: 10.5114/aoms/142103. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTCoronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO). The three key principles in management of the COVID-19 pandemic are prevention, early detection and targeted treatment. Vaccine-based prevention together with early detection has already proven its efficacy in controlling the pandemic. Early detection of infected patients could substantially accelerate the implementation of treatment,...

Chronicling the 3-year evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic: analysis of disease management, characteristics of major variants, and impacts on pathogenicity
AbstractAnnounced on December 31, 2019, the novel coronavirus arising in Wuhan City, Hubei Province resulted in millions of cases and lives lost. Following intense tracking, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was identified as the cause of COVID-19 and the continuous evolution of the virus has given rise to several variants. In this review, a comprehensive analysis of the response to the pandemic over the first three-year period is provided, focusing on disease management, development of vac...

A comprehensive review on the global efforts on vaccines and repurposed drugs for combating COVID-19
Eur J Med Chem. 2023 Aug 10;260:115719. doi: 10.1016/j.ejmech.2023.115719. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe recently discovered coronavirus, known as SARS-CoV-2, is a highly contagious and potentially lethal viral infection that was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. Since the beginning of the pandemic, an unprecedented number of COVID-19 vaccine candidates have been investigated for their potential to manage the pandemic. Herein, we reviewed vaccine development and the associated research effort, both traditional and forward-looking, to demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of ...

Can a WHO pandemic treaty help poorer nations in future outbreaks?
Global accord aims to avoid the damage caused during Covid-19 and ensure vaccines and medical equipment are distributed equally to allCovid-19 caught the world unprepared; the scramble it prompted for treatments, tests, protective equipment and vaccines favoured the world ’s richest nations. To avoid the same thing happening in future pandemics, a group of world leaders has proposed a pandemic treaty, which is being negotiated in a series of international meetings hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO).The draft treaty is aimed at ensuring equity in distributing all that is needed to handle a future pandemic, inst...

Exclusion of pregnant people from emergency vaccine clinical trials: A systematic review of clinical trial protocols and reporting from 2009 to 2019
CONCLUSION: Pregnant people are underrepresented in vaccine clinical trials conducted during outbreaks, resulting in underreporting of pregnancy-related outcomes and a lack of protection for pregnant people and neonates from infectious diseases.PMID:37442686 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2023.06.073

Vaccination against coronavirus disease 2019 in patients with pulmonary hypertension: a national prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 vaccination did not significantly augment the PH-related major adverse events for patients with WHO groups 1 and 4 PH, although there were some tolerable side effects. A large-scale randomized controlled trial is warranted to confirm this finding. The final approval of the COVID-19 vaccination for patients with PH as a public health strategy is promising.PMID:37439342 | DOI:10.1097/CM9.0000000000002767
