Japan approves Varian Medical ’ s ProBeam proton therapy
Varian Medical (NYSE:VAR) said today it won Shonin approval from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare for its ProBeam system designed for proton therapy.
Proton therapy is designed for precise treatment of certain types of cancer while providing potentially fewer side effects than conventional radiation therapy, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company said.
Varian claims that its ProBeam system is the 1st to offer fully-integrated intensity modulated proton therapy.

Toshiba, Japanese QST tout heavy-ion therapy breakthrough
Toshiba (TYO:6502) said today that it, along with Japan’s National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology have developed a novel pencil beaming scanning system which they claim significantly reduces the size of the system without lowered performance.
The company said that the newly designed system can be mounted on a rotating gantry with superconducing beam bending magnets, which will lead to further downsizing and weight reductions.
Toshiba said it will release more details of the device this week at the 56th Annual COnference of the Particle Therapy Co-operation group in Yokohama.

Proton therapy dev ProTom Int ’ l raises $30m
Proton therapy tech developer ProTom International said today it raised $30 million in a new round of funding.
The funding round will provide $30 million to the company by the end of June 2017, with $10 million already funded as of March, the company said in a press release.
ProTom produces the Radiance 330 proton therapy system, designed to offer focused proton therapy treatments to cancer patients. The company said that Massachusetts General Hospital is slated to install a Radiance 330 system, which it expects will be operational in late 2017.
