Mevion Medical closes $150m funding round
Mevion Medical Systems said today it closed a $150 million financing round with funds slated to support the company’s proton therapy devices and to expand manufacturing.
The round was led by YuanMing Capital and joined by Henan Maisheng Medical Technology and existing investors including HOPU Investments and China Everbright Limited, the Littleton, Mass.-based company said.
Mevion said that funding would be used to support its proton therapy business and to expand the company’s manufacturing capabilities to meet an increased interest in its Hyperscan systems.

Governor vetoes bill that would have benefited new Franklin cancer center
Gov. Bill Haslam has vetoed a bill that would have aided a cancer treatment center being constructed in Middle Tennessee.
The bill, which passed the House by a vote of 82-13 and by a 29-1 vote in the Senate, would have required insurance coverage of proton cancer therapy for state employees.

Mevion touts first use of S250i proton therapy system
Mevion Medical Systems today announced the launch of its Mevion S250i proton therapy system, touting that the first patient in the world had been treated with the system.
The Mevion S250i features improved pencil beam scanning fields and Hyperscan pencil beam scanning tech to allow for faster energy layer switching, the Littleton, Mass.-based company said.
The system also features the company’s Adaptive Aperture multi-leaf collimator designed for multi-layer conformal field delivery, Mevion said, which it claims provides dose gradients with up to 3 times sharper lateral penumbra.
