Radiochemical transformation of mucilage extracted from Opuntia ficus- índica using gamma radiation
Appl Radiat Isot. 2022 Aug 19;190:110430. doi: 10.1016/j.apradiso.2022.110430. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGamma irradiation is a powerful tool for modifying the physicochemical properties of polymers. Gamma radiation has been widely used to carry out reactions such as crosslinking, depolymerization, and graft copolymerization, with a wide variety of synthetic and natural polymers. Although gamma irradiation proved to be useful to modify the chemical properties of several polysaccharides, this method has not been applied to mucilage. However, irradiation could bring beneficial changes to mucilage for its use in different...

Antioxidant activity of two < em > Opuntia < /em > Mill. species fruit extracts on human sperm quality after a freeze-thaw cycle
This study investigated the phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity of fruit extracts of Opuntia dillenii (Ker Gawl.) Haw.(OD) and Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill.(OFI), yellow (F1) and red (F2) varieties. In order to evaluate the antioxidant activity of these extracts on human sperm quality after thawing, the semen parameters (vitality, motility, acrosome reaction, oxidative stress, and DNA fragmentation) were analysed after 1 h of exposure. The results showed that OD has higher phenolic content and antioxidant power than OFI, and that they are higher in F2 than F1. Furthermore, regarding the activity of extracts on th...

Chemical Composition and Antioxidant, Antiviral, Antifungal, Antibacterial and Anticancer Potentials of < em > Opuntia < /em > & amp;amp;nbsp; < em > ficus-indica < /em > Seed Oil
Molecules. 2022 Aug 25;27(17):5453. doi: 10.3390/molecules27175453.ABSTRACTOpuntia ficus-indica (OFI) is a cactus that is widely cultivated in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia especially in the Taif region due to its favorable weather for growing, and it has benefits as a food and traditional medicine. The aim of the current study was to chemically characterize Opuntia ficus-indica seed oil from Taif, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, using GC-MS and HPLC analysis and evaluate its antioxidant, antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and anticancer activities. Linolenic acid was the dominating fatty acid in OFI oil, followed by oleic acid, ...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 5830: Acid Hydrolysis of Pectin and Mucilage from Cactus (Opuntia ficus) for Identification and Quantification of Monosaccharides
a Notario Pectin and mucilage are polysaccharides from the cactus Opuntia ficus-indica, which are also known as hydrocolloids, with useful properties in industries such as food, pharmaceuticals, and construction, among others. In the present work, cactus hydrocolloids were hydrolyzed characterized using two techniques: first, thin-layer chromatography, to identify the monosaccharides present in the sample, followed by the phenol–sulfuric acid method to determine the monosaccharide content. The hydrolyzing method allowed us to reduce the processing time to 180 min and, considering the identification and qu...
