Autopsy for pneumonia (COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2)
How are you handling autopsies (especially for pneumonia), in the context of COVID-19 / SARS-CoV-2? I worry about infected patients without a diagnosis of COVID-19. Of note, here are CDC's guidelines: Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a virus (more specifically, a coronavirus) identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China. www.cdc.gov Postmortem activities should be conducted with a focus on a...

What's the ER doc's role in epidemiology?
Have any of y'all thought about this? For example, if someone comes into the ED with flu like symptoms, in the middle of flu season, and is an otherwise young and healthy individuals, I see no utility in testing for the flu (I'm also not a fan of Tamiflu for non-high risk populations), so it's usually just r/o something like a pneumonia, reassurance, doctor's note, and OTC symptom control. But with these periodic outbreaks of things like SARS, MERS, this novel corona virus, or even failed... What's the ER doc's role in epidemiology? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

“Can’t come in; I am sick”
We have a doc in our group that has “called out” for things like a gastroenteritis and pneumonia. As horrible as it is I have found it annoying at times because it puts everyone under a lot of stress to cover her. It seems to be an unspoken rule in my group that you don’t just “call out” because you’re sick. “In the hospital” type of sick is different (although one of my coworkers did work through appendicitis and then admitted himself after his shift, but I digress). I am talking about cold... “Can’t come in; I am sick” (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is OMT used for patients with walking pneumonia?
Was curious if osteopathic manipulative therapy is used with walking pneumonia (mild)? How would this help them? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Malpractice Case: Missed x-ray finding
Case 8: Cough – medmalreviewer Patient seen for cough. Radiology read mentions incidental finding. No follow-up until several years later, patient's incidental finding now developed into inoperable cancer. Patient sues. Doc has died in the meantime, so they're really just suing his estate. Lawsuit dismissed due to statute of limitations. I'm guessing the doc looked at the xray, searching for pneumonia, did not see any, so discharged... Are Pharmacists ALLOWED to read X-rays?
Are pharmacists trained to read X-rays or would this be considered inappropriate? I mean, if the patient X-ray shows pneumonia I can see a pharmacist double checking we did not misdiagnose the patient before they dose the antibiotics. Misdiagnosis happen ALL the time in medicine, no question. Is reading an X-ray something pharmacists can do and are trained in? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hypoxic Respiratory Failure (COPD exac, CHF Exac, Pneumonia)
This is one of the most common diagnosis I admit as a hospitalist, and often my patients usually have COPD, & CHF. They end up getting treated for both COPD exacerbation and CHF exacerbation and sometiems if the CXR is unclear (edema vs infection), they get treated w/ abx as well. Lot of waste and side effects. Besides the obvious fever, WBC count, what else do you guys use to confidently discriminate between these etiologies. Procalcitonin is one lab I use. Wheezing (could be present...
