Total Abdominal Hysterectomy – my experience first 6 weeks, Karen ’ s story
I am 43 yrs old, have suffered abnormal smear test results, endometriosis and blocked fallopian tubes since my early 20’s, resulting in four unsuccessful rounds of IVF treatment, and more recently, increased heavy bleeding during my menstrual cycle. Prior to Christmas (2014) I underwent my third laparoscopy, in which large cysts were found on one ovary. Due to my history, I was offered a hysterectomy and given the choice of partial or total removal. From research, I believed myself to be at higher risk of ovarian and cervical cancer, so decided with my consultant that I would opt for a Total Abdominal Hysterectomy an...

Two Tests to Predict How Long You Might Live
In this study of over 6,500 adults (at least 52 years of age), participants were asked that question. Over 8 years of follow-up, people who felt at least 3 years younger than their actual age were less likely to die than those who felt their actual age or older. There are lots of reasons why this might make sense. If you feel older than your age, you probably already have some underlying health conditions. Or you might be depressed which we know leads to increased mortality. If you don't feel "right," you need to listen to your body, and realize it is telling you that you need to get it checked. And the lesson here would...

Why the Smells of Flowers Affect Us More Than We Think
By Pat Miller, florist on BloomNation and Owner of A Bed of Roses Florist in San Francisco, CA It turns out there's a reason why you love decorating your home and office with fresh flowers -- biophilia. According to prominent German psychologist Eric Fromm, biophilia is "the passionate love of life and of all that is alive." This natural tendency makes the exposure to plants and flowers on a regular basis more necessary than most would think. Unfortunately, our cemented-over way of daily living disconnects us from the natural world, both physically and emotionally. Recent studies at Harvard and Rutgers show that expos...

Losing Chrissy
My best friend and roommate died from brain cancer last month, and I keep expecting her to walk in the front door and wonder why I'm sitting here crying, listening to Adam Levine and eating her almond butter. I've taken to wearing her parrot print dress around the apartment, which I'm starting to see as vaguely cannibalistic. I would say it's making me feel better while I wait for her parents to come from Indiana and collect all of her things, but I also know that my grieving process is kind of all over the place. She really didn't care for Adam Levine, and I think that's what's making me cry. I'm trying to stay connected...

Bored, Blue or Blah? 4 Ways to Cope
Do you munch when you are bored? Most of us do! Here are some easy, scientifically researched ideas on how to beat boredom eating. 1. Scenery Switcheroo: In an interesting (and somewhat disturbing!) 2015 study in the journal of Appetite found that people eat just to break up the feeling of monotony rather than pleasure seeking. After watching a repetitive video clip, research participants could eat chocolate or inflict a shock on themselves. They did both! The subjects would even inflict pain to themselves just to break out of blandness rather than seeking pleasure. No need for pain! Just switch things up a little. Chan...

Head lice: What parents need to know
Earlier this year, a Springfield toddler suffocated as her family attempted a home treatment for head lice. The case is a tragic reminder that anyone can get lice, no matter your income, the way you clean your home or how many pets you own. But there are recommended ways to treat an infestation. Are there natural or home remedies that work? There are some who claim that mayonnaise or petroleum jelly can be used to coat the head and smother the lice. This has not been proven effective, and even the most well-behaved of young children will not sit with goop on their heads for the recommended 20 hours while wearing a shower c...
