American Telemedicine Association Leaps Into Privacy and AI Policies
The computerization of daily life has evolved from a set of technical decisions to a matter of urgent public policy over the past few decades. The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) recently released two sets of principles that highlights its concerns in two prominent computing issues: privacy and AI. Of course, privacy and AI both make front-page news these days. Concerns over the data protection of individuals dates back to the 1970s. The issue takes on new urgency since evidence has emerged about the manipulation of voters and exploitation of children. AI became the subject of an international summit at Bletchley P...

How Healthcare Can Embrace the Cloud Without Jeopardizing Data
The following is a guest article by Rodman Ramezanian, Global Cloud Threat Lead at Skyhigh Security Healthcare, like other sectors, is undergoing a massive digital transformation to meet the changing needs of patients and workers. As part of this transformation, there are a growing number of roles that can be performed virtually – such as grant administrators, clinical trial coordinators, or telehealth care providers – although some workers, like emergency room physicians, must still be present onsite. Since remote and hybrid employees need to be able to collaborate anytime, anywhere, and from multiple devices, many he...

Some Like It Hot! A Century-Old Disease on Our Southern Shores
By MIKE MAGEE Naomi Orestes PhD, Professor of the History of Science at Harvard, didn’t mince words  as she placed our predicament in context when she said, “If you know your Greek tragedies you know power, hubris, and tragedy go hand in hand. If we don’t address the harmful aspects of human activities, most obviously disruptive climate change, we are headed for tragedy.” At the time, as a member of the Anthropocene Workgroup, she and a group of international climate scientists were focused on defining and measuring nine “planetary boundaries,” environmental indicators of planetary health. At...

“Doomscrolling” – Call the doctor!
by MIKE MAGEE Exactly 1 year ago, mental health experts alerted the medical world to their version of an assessment scale for yet another new condition – “doomscrolling.” As defined in the article, “Constant exposure to negative news on social media and news feeds could take the form of ‘doomscrolling’ which is commonly defined as a habit of scrolling through social media and news feeds where users obsessively seek for depressing and negative information.” No one can deny a range of legitimate concerns. Faced with continued background noise from the pandemic, add global warming, renegade AI, and...

Breathalyzers, Breathomics And Exhalomics In The Digital Health Age
Most of us might take the breathing process for granted; after all it is an autonomous process that we only really start noticing when something about it is off. However, respiratory diseases are among the major causes of fatalities worldwide. The WHO estimates that by 2030, such conditions will be responsible for one in five deaths. As the signs of declining respiratory health or factors that influence it can be subtle, an array of digital health technologies and approaches have come to address such issues. Along with those innovations, new terminologies such as smart breathalyzers, breathomics and exhalome have entere...

Enhanced mRNA Vaccine May Work Intranasally.
Researchers at MIT have developed an enhanced mRNA vaccine system that can elicit a greater immune response at lower doses. The vaccine technology is so potent that it may be useful for intranasal COVID-19 vaccines. This would have the benefit of localized immunity in the nasal mucus membranes that could kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus before it enters the body. The system includes an mRNA strand that encodes the viral spike protein, as with earlier generations of such vaccines, but in this case the strand also encodes for an immune protein called C3d. This protein typically binds to antigens, such as the spike protein, in the b...

Lateral Flow Test for Gingivitis
Researchers at the University of Cincinnati have developed a lateral flow assay that can detect bacterial toxins from Porphyromonas gingivalis, the causative bacteria for gingivitis. The technology could make it easier and faster to identify early-stage gingivitis, which can lead to periodontitis and eventual tooth loss, as well as contributing to a variety of other diseases such as stroke and heart disease. The lateral flow assay requires a small saliva sample, and can provide results very quickly, but does require the saliva sample to be pre-treated with potato starch to deactivate salivary amylase, an enzyme that can in...
