I Want a Lazy Girl Job Too
BY KIM BELLARD I came across a phrase the other day that is so evocative, so delicious, that I had to write about it: “lazy girl job,” or, as you might know it. @#lazygirljob. Now, before anyone gets too offended, it’s not about labeling girls as lazy; it’s not really even about lazy or even only girls.  It’s about wanting jobs with the proverbial work-life balance: jobs that pay decently, don’t require crazy hours, and give employees flexibility to manage the other parts of their lives.  Author Eliza Van Cort told Bryan Robinson, writing in Forbes: “The phrasing ‘lazy girl job’ is less than ideal...

Patient Experience – Outside the Four Walls of the Hospital – Healthcare IT Today Podcast Episode 120
For the 120th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we are taking a look at the patient experience outside of the hospital. We kick off this episode by detailing our own experiences with care outside of hospitals and clinics. Next, we share the promising technologies we’ve seen improving patient experience in other care settings. Then we discuss our worries about the potential decline in telehealth and how that will impact the patient experience. And to wrap everything up, we debate if all of this technology working on patient care from home will one day lead to everyone having an ICU in their house. Here’s a previ...

Can Hallucinated AI Help with Patient Engagement?
The following is a guest article by Michelle X. Zhou, Ph.D., Co-Founder and CEO at Juji ChatGPT and similar AI applications have given humankind a new tool. While this new tool is powerful, it may not always be reliable. Hence the term “AI hallucinations” is coined to refer to such unreliable AI performance. Here is an example. I asked ChatGPT, “Who founded Juji“, the AI startup I co-founded. It hallucinated with the following reply: It got several facts wrong including my education. I received my Ph.D. from Columbia University, not Carnegie Mellon University. Moreover, Juji was co-founded by Dr. H...

Republican Misbehavior Promoted Health Professional Activism
By MIKE MAGEE If you wanted to create a motto for the summer of 2023 – one that would stand the test of time from the medical exam room of Ohio to the gilded bathroom of Mar-a-lago – it would have to be Jack Smith’s “Facts matter!” If that is true on a national scale, it is equally true in states across the nation where doctors increasingly are coming out from behind a self-imposed clinical curtain and going public. As reported in ProPublica last week, “Doctors who previously never mixed work with politics are jumping into the abortion debate by lobbying state lawmakers, campaigning, forming polit...

The Top 10 Health Chatbots
This study from March 2023 reports how an app developed to help patients’ bowel preparation can increase compliance and thus, the number of successful colonoscopies. In some cases, health chatbots are also able to connect patients with clinicians for diagnosis or treatment, but that is one step further down the line. The general idea is that in the future, these talking or texting smart algorithms might become the first contact point for primary care. Patients will not get in touch with physicians or nurses or any medical professional with every one of their health questions but will turn to chatbots first. If th...

Public Health Transparency Leads to Better Outcomes at San Bernardino County
Maps are important tools in infectious disease surveillance. They depict where cases are occurring and where treatment resources are needed. San Bernardino County uses geographic information system (GIS) technology to accurately track the prevalence of specific infectious diseases in their communities. That information is used to raise awareness and to marshal resources to limit the spread. Healthcare IT Today sat down with Diana Ibrahim, Public Health Program Manager and Umang Sharma, Statistical Analyst at the San Bernardino County Department of Public Health (SBCDPH), to learn more. GIS technology + Disease Surveillance...

Expanding Healthcare ’s Reach on the Edge
This article focuses on ways to take advantage of cloud solutions on the edge. Digital Transformation Equals A Lot of Data   Technology is being used in new and interesting ways in healthcare. For example, tablets are now commonplace in healthcare facilities with some hospitals providing bedside connected tablets. Patients can use the devices to check their medication, read about their doctors, and even order their meals, freeing the staff to focus on medical care.   Wearable medical devices can monitor vital signs such as heart rate and blood pressure, and health monitors can help with remote care. These wearabl...
