Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 6699: Essential Oil Microemulsions Inactivate Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria on Iceberg Lettuce During 28-Day Storage at 4 & deg;C
The objective of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activities of essential oil-based microemulsions in the wash water against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Pseudomonas fluorescens on Iceberg lettuce. Evaluated wash microemulsions included oregano oil, lemongrass oil, and cinnamon oil, along with a plant-based emulsifier for improved solubility. Iceberg lettuce was inoculated for 2 min with E. coli O157:H7 (6.0 log CFU/g) or P. fluorescens (6.0 log CFU/g) and then dip-treated in a phosphate buffered saline (PBS) control, 50 ppm chlorine, 3% hydrogen peroxide treatment or a 0.1%, 0.3%, or 0.5% microemulsion solu...

Sublethal effects of oregano essential oil and its major compound carvacrol on biological parameters of Aedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae)
Exp Parasitol. 2022 Sep 30:108392. doi: 10.1016/j.exppara.2022.108392. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMosquito management programs rely basically on the use of conventional synthetic larvicides. However, frequent applications and misuse of some synthetic insecticides have led to problems related to mosquito resistance development, harmful effects on human health and unacceptable environmental effects on non-target organisms. Recently, a growing number of phytochemicals has been tested as more eco-friendly larvicides against various mosquito species, exerting high efficacy with multiple modes of action. In the laboratory, we...

Molecules, Vol. 27, Pages 6422: Inhibitory Effect of GRAS Essential Oils and Plant Extracts on the Growth of Aspergillus westerdijkiae and Aspergillus carbonarius Strains
elly Moura Keller The effect of essential oils (obtained using hydrodistillation) and plant extracts (ethanolic, aqueous, and hexanic extractions) of 10 different plants cultivated in Brazil were tested using the diffusion agar method, with the objective of evaluating the inhibitory effect of the oils and extracts on the mycelial growth of Aspergillus westerdijkiae NRRL 3174 and A. carbonarius RC 2054 (UNRC). Of the 40 essential oils and plant extracts analyzed, oregano essential oil and plant extract, rosemary essential oil, and the clove ethanolic extract were the best choice to obtain the growth parameters (radial g...

Long Term Oral Administration of Oregano Essence Effectively Relieves Polycystic Ovarian Rats through Endocrine and Inflammatory Balance
Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2022 Sep 16;2022:5303583. doi: 10.1155/2022/5303583. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTPolycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is alarmingly rising and sustainable therapy/prevention is needed. Here, we evaluated the therapeutic effects of oregano or Origanum vulgare (O. vulgare) essence (OE) on the PCOS rat model system. Vaginal smears monitored the estrous cycle of 40 virgin adult rats, and they received 2 mg estradiol valerate (EV)/0.2 ml corn oil intramuscularly to induce PCOS. At 60 days post-EV injection, all rats were evaluated for follicular development/cysts. The EV-induced PCOS rats were ora...

Effect of dietary oregano essential oil and milk replacer on physiological status and immunological responses of pre- and post-weaned Ghoongroo piglets
In conclusion, milk replacer, especially with the inclusion of oregano EO, can lower weaning stress, enhance nonspecific immunity and improve growth and health status of piglets.PMID:36062916 | DOI:10.1080/10495398.2022.2118131 (Source: Animal Biotechnology)

Evaluation of the Herb-Drug Interaction Potential of Commonly Used Botanicals on the US Market with Regard to PXR- and AhR-Mediated Influences on CYP3A4 and CYP1A2
In this study, hydroethanolic extracts of 30 top-selling botanicals (herbs) commonly used as ingredients of herbal dietary supplements in the US were screened for their potential to activate the human pregnane X receptor (hPXR) and human aryl hydrocarbon receptor (hAhR) and to increase the activities of hPXR- and hAhR-regulated drug metabolizing cytochrome P450 enzymes (i.e., CYP3A4 and CYP1A2, respectively). Of the 30 botanicals tested, 21 induced PXR and 29 induced AhR transcriptional activities. Out of the 21 botanicals that induced hPXR transcriptional activity, 14 yielded >50% induction in CYP3A4 activity at concen...
