Breaking Down What COVID-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Means
The U.S. now has three safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines being shipped around the country and making it into people’s arms. Yet two of them are about 95% efficacious, while another is 66% efficacious, which may make it tempting to rank them, and assume that people receiving the 66% efficacious shot are somehow less protected against COVID-19. That’s not the case, however, since it’s not really possible to compare the vaccines to each other. In the table below, we’ve laid out what goes int...

Overlooked Virus Killer
Sales of vitamin C supplements have tripled in the last few weeks… And the most powerful kind of vitamin C is sold out on Amazon. (More on that in a minute.) I’m glad to see people turning to vitamin C. But the the chewable form you usually find at the drugstore won’t give you the boost you’re looking for. You see, absorption — or bioavailability — is an issue, and your body can only absorb about 500 mg of this conventional form of vitamin C before you hit saturation. And that’s nowhere near enough. In a moment I’ll show you a better form of vitamin C… and how you can take ...

New technique has potential to protect oranges from citrus greening

Want To Live Longer? Study Suggests You Should Ditch Soda
This study, as well as other research on the connection between diet and sugary beverages and health risks, is observational and cannot show cause and effect. That’s a major limitation, researchers say, as it’s impossible to determine whether the association is due to a specific artificial sweetener, a type of beverage, obesity or another hidden health issue. “The cause behind these associations isn’t clear,” said Bergquist. “Other potential biological causes could be attributed to experimental evidence linking consumption of artificial sweeteners to sugar cravings, appetite stimulation ...

Chocolate Can Throw Off Potency Tests On Marijuana Edibles, Researchers Say
(AP) – How much marijuana is really in that pot brownie? Chocolate can throw off potency tests so labels aren’t always accurate, and now scientists are trying to figure out why. That helps medical marijuana patients get the desired dose and other consumers attune their buzz. But something about chocolate, chemists say, seems to interfere with potency testing. A chocolate labeled as 10 milligrams of THC could have far more and send s...

Energy Drinks May Have Unintended Health Risks
(CNN) — Energy drinks may promise a boost, but experts are increasingly concerned that their cocktails of ingredients could have unintended health risks. A study published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that caffeinated energy drinks altered the heart’s electrical activity and raised blood pressure. The extent of these electrical changes — which signal the heart’s chambers squeezing and relaxing — is “generally considered mild,” according to study author Sachin Shah, a professor of pharmacy at the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Scienc...
