Why donor egg IVF is a better option than surrogacy
Women are much more attached to their embryos than to their uterus. This makes perfect sense. After all , the high point of an IVF cycle is you get a chance to see your embryos. There is no question that embryos are  beautiful , and because they represent potential future babies, many women refer to them fondly as their embies ! The uterus , on the other hand , is not very glamorous. Most women think of it as just a passive container - and one which has often caused them considerable grief during their menstrual periods !This is why when the IVF cycle fails , women are much more likely to blame the uterus rather than ...

Does HLA sharing cause pregnancy losses ?
I recently heard from one of my friend who is going through IVF to have her child. In the course of her treatment , she went through two pregnancy losses, one at 12 weeks and one at 5 weeks. As usual, a battery of tests were performed on her by her IVF specialist to find out where the fault lay- why did the miscarriage happen ? Of the several tests performed on her, two tests came back positive. She was told her NK cells in uterus are elevated ; and that her HLA haplotype (what the heck is that?) was very similar to her husband's. On seeing her results, her doctor told her that it was a waste of time and energy in ...

The Op-Ed: Off-Label Pregnancy Rx Needs More Regs
With all the talk of off-label promotion and commercial free speech, a vexing issue remains – patient safety. A case in point is the use of dexamethasone, which is sometimes given to pregnant women at risk of having a child with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Prenatal dexamethasone cannot prevent a child being born with CAH, but it may reduce the odds a girl will be born sex atypical from having CAH. A recent paper in AJOG argued against the use because of safety concerns. We asked Alice Dreger, a professor of Clinical Medical Humanities & Bioethics at Northwestern University, to explain… In a legal case...

Stroke Symptoms Checklist
People in recovery may have damaged their bodies during their drinking or drugging careers. It may be helpful to know the warning signs of stroke – especially in older age groups. A stroke happens when a blood vessel carrying oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot (ischemic stroke) or ruptures (hemorrhagic stroke). When this occurs, part of the brain no longer receives the oxygen it needs, and the tissue in that area starts to die. Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) consist of stroke-like symptoms, which go away shortly after starting and produce no lasting damage. Even if your symptoms disappear en...

In Armenia, Abortion Rates are High and Access to Contraception is Limited
Taleen K. Moughamian, a women’s health nurse practitioner in Philadelphia, traveled to Armenia in the fall of 2012. Working with the Children of Armenia Fund, she conducted  health exams, including breast and cervical cancer screenings, and provided contraceptive counseling. The following account is based on her work and conversations with Armenian women.   by Taleen K. Moughamian The differences between Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, and the rest of the country are vast. While Yerevan has most of the modern-day conveniences you could ask for, the villages I visited in the Armavir region have populations between 300...

When Pregnancy is a Crime: Arrests, Forced Interventions in the Name of Public Health
Although this January marks the 40th anniversary of the landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, we know that there is still much work to be done to ensure reproductive justice for all women. The Guttmacher Institute reports that 2012 saw the second highest number of abortion restrictions enacted in a single year; the Center for Reproductive Justice addresses each state in this report. Among the provisions ultimately defeated were “fetal personhood” bills in Mississippi and Oklahoma. But the notion that fetuses should be protected from the women carrying them has resulted in the restriction and pun...

Guest Post: Pregnancy, Miscarriage, and Type 1 Diabetes.
Today's guest post comes from my dear friend Kate Boylan, who has experienced a journey with diabetes, pregnancy, and miscarriage.  I'm grateful that there are people like Kate who put it out there like this, even when it must still feel raw.  I hope there's some healing found for her in sharing.*   *   * “It has absolutely nothing to do with diabetes.”

That is what the renowned Boston-area high-risk obstetrician reported to me and my husband right after she told us that I was miscarrying my first pregnancy. She went on, “Based on the irregular heartbeat, and the lack of growth in...

Don't Put All The Blame On Hormones - Gluten Can Shorten Your Sex Life, Too
Even though it is believed that with menopause and andropause comes a loss of libido, fertility and sex drive, it has been always assumed that the reason is due to a change in hormones. However, a recent study is claiming that it may not be the only reason, and that gluten, once again, is the culprit for our failing health! (1,2). Moreover, the problem starts long time before menopause hits.  This problem affects the whole reproductive life of a woman, leading to miscarriages and premature birth.  This problem makes menopause more severe than in healthy women.  But what is it? What is this unknown enemy that can make su...

A long gestation!
Settlement reached in pregnancy drug cancer lawsuit BOSTON -- Eli Lilly and Co. has settled a lawsuit brought by four sisters who contended their breast cancer was caused by a drug their mother took during pregnancy in the 1950s, a move some believe could trigger financial settlements in scores of other claims brought by women around the country. A total of 51 women, including the Melnick sisters, filed lawsuits in Boston against more than a dozen companies that made or marketed a synthetic estrogen known as DES. The Melnick sisters' case was the first to go to trial. The settlement was announced Wednesday on the secon...

What to say to a newly diagnosed cancer patient
“So, the doctor told me I have breast cancer. I just wanted to let you know. I’m doing fine right now, but I have some decisions to make regarding my treatment options. I’ll keep you posted.”This may be a typical email sent to family and friends after receiving a breast cancer diagnosis. Sending emails seems more practical at this point. With so many friends and family to update, unless a general meeting is called at the local hotel conference room, they would have to repeat these words over and over again. It ’s hard enough to say them once. Here come the well meaning responses.viawww.kevinmd.comArgh. It&#...
