Use of locum doctors in NHS trusts in England: analysis of routinely collected workforce data 2019-2021
Conclusions There were large variations in the demand for and use of locum doctors in NHS trusts. Trusts with poor CQC ratings and smaller trusts appear to use locum doctors more intensively compared with other trust types. Unfilled shifts were at a 3-year high at the end of 2021 suggesting increased demand which may result from growing workforce shortages in NHS trusts. (Source: BMJ Open)

Central nervous system involvement in two siblings affected by hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis 30 years after liver transplantation: a model for gene-silencing therapies
In this report we describe two siblings affected with ATTRv, who developed first symptoms of disease at a young age and underwent a liver transplant with prompt resolution of clinical manifestations. After several years, central nervous system and eyes symptoms relapsed despite treatment, considering that the synthesis of mutated protein continues in choroid plexus, a locum where current therapies are unable to act. In our opinion, these cases represent a long-term prognostic model for the novel gene-silencers approved for ATTRv, because they share a similar therapeutic effect with liver transplant: the block of mutated pr...

What causes delays in diagnosing blood cancers? A rapid review of the evidence
CONCLUSION: Blood cancers are difficult to diagnose due to non-specific heterogeneous symptoms, and this is reflected in how those symptoms are interpreted by patients and managed by HCPs. It is important to understand how different interpretations affect delays in help-seeking, and what HCPs can do to support timely follow-up for patients.PMID:37039465 | DOI:10.1017/S1463423623000129 (Source: Primary Care)

Implementing an audit and feedback cycle to improve adherence to the Choosing Wisely Canada recommendations: clustered randomized trail
CONCLUSIONS: Both A&F and recommendation summaries sent to providers by a trusted source reduced unnecessary prescriptions. Our findings support further scale up of efforts to engage with primary care practices to improve care with A&F.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05385445, retrospectively registered, 23/05/2022.PMID:36435746 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-022-01912-7 (Source: Primary Care)
