Cross-national Validation of the Arabic Version of the Cannabis Use Intention Questionnaire (CUIQ) Among University Students from Egypt, Kuwait, and Tunisia
AbstractDespite the widespread use of cannabis and its relative acceptance among Arab young adults, there still remains high social stigma in addressing these issues and providing treatment options. In addition, research on cannabis use among young adults from Arab nations is still scarce, which is in part due to the lack of valid and reliable measures that are tailored to the Arab social-cultural contexts. This leaves young cannabis users, health care providers, researchers, legislators and policy makers without the evidence needed to make informed decisions about cannabis use. For these reasons, this study aimed to trans...

In Service to Their Patients and Their Country
Caring. Effective. Dutiful. Supportive. Serving. Protective. Leading. Responsible. These words easily describe a hospitalist or a soldier—and sometimes both. In honor of Veteran’s Day, we talked with four SHM members, working hospitalists, who also have served, or currently serve, in the military. While their paths differ, their commitment to their patients and their country is the same. Jon Sweet, MD, FACP (@jonmsweet) Dr. Sweet Chair of medicine and senior vice president, Carilion Clinic, professor, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine in Roanoke, Va., former major, United States Air Force Dr. Sweet began his ...

A Survey Study on Knowledge and Attitude Toward the Ethics Committee and Research Ethical Practices Among Researchers From Kuwait
AbstractThe integrity of research findings and the safety of participants who voluntarily consent to participate in research studies must be assured through ethical approaches. Additionally, ethical guidelines and the ethics committee protect participants from unfair practices by the research team. Therefore, this study aims to assess the knowledge and attitudes toward the ethics committee and research ethical practices among the researchers of a diabetes institute in Kuwait. An anonymous survey was conducted through an online questionnaire using Microsoft Forms. The study had a response rate of 86%. Among the 55 participa...

ONECUT1 variants beyond type 1 and type 2 diabetes: exploring clinical diversity and epigenetic associations in Arab cohorts
ONECUT1 gene, encoding hepatocyte nuclear factor 6, is involved in pancreas and liver development. ONECUT1 mutations impair the function of pancreatic β-cells and control a transcriptional/epigenetic machinery regulating endocrine development. Homozygous nonsense and missense mutations at ONECUT1_p.E231 and a homozygous frameshift mutation at ONECUT1_p.M289 were reported in neonatal diabetes individuals of French, Turkish, and Indian ethnicity, respectively. Additionally, heterozygous variants were observed in Northern European T2D patients, and Italian patients with neonatal diabetes and early-/late-onset T2D. Examining ...

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in vitamin D binding protein and 25-hydroxylase genes affect vitamin D levels in adolescents of Arab ethnicity in Kuwait
In this study, we investigated the association of two SNPs from GC (rs4588 and rs7041) and three SNPs from CYP2R1 (rs10741657, rs11023374 and rs12794714) with vitamin D levels and VDD in a nationally representative sample of adolescents of Arab ethnicity from Kuwait. Multivariable linear regression, corrected for age, sex, parental education, governorate, body mass index, and exposure to sun, demonstrated that each of the 5 study variants showed significant associations with plasma 25(OH)D levels in one or more of the additive, recessive, and dominant genetic models - the rs10741657 under all the three models, rs12794714 u...

The economic impact of obesity in Kuwait: A micro-costing study evaluating the burden of obesity-related comorbidities
ConclusionsOur study confirms that ORCs generate significant financial burden to the public payer. The study provides an economic case for policymakers to recognize the exigency for obesity prevention and control in accordance with the ORC prevalence, and the need for sustainable investments towards body-mass index management to prevent individuals from developing multiple comorbidities.PMID:37853705 | DOI:10.1080/13696998.2023.2265721 (Source: Journal of Medical Economics)
