Modulation of cardio-respiratory activity in mice via transcranial focused ultrasound
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of FUS on autonomic nervous system activity, including heart and respiratory rates, and to separate the thermal modulation from combined thermal and mechanical FUS effects. Methods: The thalamus and hypothalamus of wild-type mice were sonicated with a continuous-wave, 2 MHz FUS transducer at pressures of 425 and 850 kPa for 60 seconds. Cardiac and respiratory rates were monitored as signs of autonomic nervous activity. FUS-induced changes in autonomic activity were compared to FUS targeted to a spatially-distant motor region and to laser-induced heating. (Source: Ult...

Automated 3-D Ultrasound Elastography of the Breast: An In Vivo Validation Study
Studies have indicated that adding 2-D quasi-static elastography to B-mode ultrasound imaging improved the specificity for malignant lesion detection, as malignant lesions are often stiffer (increased strain ratio) compared with benign lesions. This method is limited by its user dependency and so unsuitable for breast screening. To overcome this limitation, we implemented quasi-static elastography in an automated breast volume scanner (ABVS), which is an operator-independent 3-D ultrasound system and is especially useful for screening women with dense breasts. Ultrasound Modulates Calcium Activity in Cultured Neurons, Glial Cells, Endothelial Cells and Pericytes
Ultrasound is being researched as a method to modulate the brain. Studies of the interaction of sound with neurons support the hypothesis that mechanosensitive ion channels play an important role in ultrasound neuromodulation. The response of cells other than neurons (e.g., astrocytes, pericytes and endothelial cells) have not been fully characterized, despite playing an important role in brain function. One-Stop Automated Diagnostic System for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome in Ultrasound Images Using Deep Learning
Ultrasound (US) examination has unique advantages in diagnosing carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), although identification of the median nerve (MN) and diagnosis of CTS depend heavily on the expertise of examiners. In the aim of alleviating this problem, we developed a one-stop automated CTS diagnosis system (OSA-CTSD) and evaluated its effectiveness as a computer-aided diagnostic tool. Development and Clinical Application of Artificial Intelligence Assistant System for Rotator Cuff Ultrasound Scanning
We developed an intelligent assistance system for shoulder ultrasound imaging, incorporating deep-learning algorithms to facilitate standard plane recognition and automatic tissue segmentation of the rotator cuff and its surrounding structures. We evaluated the system's performance using a dedicated data set of rotator cuff ultrasound images to assess its feasibility in clinical practice. (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)

Education in Focused Assessment With Sonography for Trauma Using Immersive Virtual Reality: A Prospective, Interventional Cohort Study and Non-inferiority Analysis With a Historical Control
Focused assessment with sonography for trauma (FAST) is a valuable ultrasound procedure in emergency settings, and there is a need for evidence-based education in FAST to ensure competencies. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) is a progressive training modality gaining traction in the field of ultrasound training. IVR holds several economic and practical advantages to the common instructor-led FAST courses using screen-based simulation (SBS). (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)

Fully Automated Analysis of Muscle Architecture from B-Mode Ultrasound Images with DL_Track_US
B-mode ultrasound can be used to image musculoskeletal tissues, but one major bottleneck is analyses of muscle architectural parameters (i.e., muscle thickness, pennation angle and fascicle length), which are most often performed manually. (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)
