Catheter-Based Medical Device Biofilm Ablation Using Histotripsy: A Parameter Study
Biofilm formation in medical catheters is a major source of hospital-acquired infections which can produce increased morbidity and mortality for patients. Histotripsy is a non-invasive, non-thermal focused ultrasound therapy and recently has been found to be effective at removal of biofilm from medical catheters. Previously established histotripsy methods for biofilm removal, however, would require several hours of use to effectively treat a full-length medical catheter. Here, we investigate the potential to increase the speed and efficiency with which biofilms can be ablated from catheters using histotripsy. (Source: Ultr...

Peri-operative Hemi-diaphragmatic Variations After Brachial Plexus Block Above the Clavicle: A Prospective Observational Study of the Contralateral Side
Hemi-diaphragm palsy after brachial plexus block above the clavicle (BPBAC) occurs frequently, but few patients develop post-operative pulmonary complications (PPC). We hypothesized that contralateral hemidiaphragm function increases after BPBAC. This contralateral function preserves global diaphragmatic function, avoiding PPC in the case of ipsilateral hemi-diaphragm palsy. (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)

Evaluation of Tumor Fibrosis in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma by 2-D Shear Wave Elastography: A Pilot Study
The aim of the work described here was to investigate the association of the stromal proportion with the elasticity obtained by 2-D shear wave elastography (SWE) and the diagnostic value of elasticity in evaluating tumor stromal fibrosis in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Development of a Deep Learning –Based System for Optic Nerve Characterization in Transorbital Ultrasound Images on a Multicenter Data Set
We describe a deep learning –based system for automatic characterization of the optic nerve from B-mode TOS images by automatic measurement of the OND and ONSD. In addition, we determine how the signal-to-noise ratio in two different areas of the image influences system performance. (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)

Longitudinal Movements and Stiffness of Lower Extremity Nerves Measured by Ultrasonography and Ultrasound Elastography in Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Populations: A Systematic Review With Meta-analysis
This study was aimed at analyzing the effectiveness of ultrasonography (US) and ultrasound elastography (UE) in evaluating longitudinal sliding and stiffness of nerves. In line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement, we analyzed 1112 publications (range: 2010 –2021) extracted from MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science focusing on specific outcomes, including shear wave velocity (m/s), shear modulus (kPa), strain ratio (SR) and excursion (mm). Thirty-three papers were included and evaluated for overall quality and risk of bias. (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)

Treatment of Liver Metastases With Focused Ultrasound and Microbubbles in Patients With Colorectal Cancer Receiving Chemotherapy
Pre-clinical trials have obtained promising results that focused ultrasound (FUS) combined with microbubbles (MBs) increases tumor uptake and the therapeutic effect of drugs. The aims of the study described here were to investigate whether FUS and MBs could improve the effect of chemotherapy in patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer and to investigate the safety and feasibility of using FUS  + MBs. Synthesis and Sonodynamic Antibacterial Activity Evaluation of Three Novel Fluoroquinolone Compounds
Antibiotics have been the mainstay of clinical treatment for bacterial infections [1]. With the widespread application and even abuse of antibiotics, drug-resistant bacteria have emerged. Meanwhile, drug-resistant bacterial infections pose a major threat to global public health security [2]. In 2019, a United Nations report noted that drug-resistant bacterial infections kill at least 700,000 people worldwide each year [3]. Therefore, the search for new antibacterial treatments has become a research priority to combat drug-resistant bacteria. (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)

Automated Detection of Apical Foreshortening in Echocardiography Using Statistical Shape Modelling
Automated detection of foreshortening, a common challenge in routine 2-D echocardiography, has the potential to improve quality of acquisitions and reduce the variability of left ventricular measurements. Acquiring and labelling the required training data is challenging due to the time-intensive and highly subjective nature of foreshortened apical views. We aimed to develop an automatic pipeline for the detection of foreshortening. To this end, we propose a method to generate synthetic apical-four-chamber (A4C) views with matching ground truth foreshortening labels. (Source: Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology)
