Blood consumption in the Role 2 setting: A Department of Defense Trauma Registry analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We described volumes of blood products consumed at the Role 2 during recent conflicts. The maximum number of units consumed among survivors exceeds currently recommended available blood supply. Our findings suggest that rapid resupply and cold-stored chain demands may be higher than anticipated in future conflicts.PMID:38361432 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17741 (Source: Transfusion)

Performance of far forward iceless blood storage containers in controlled cold environments
CONCLUSION: The GHB, when properly preconditioned, effectively maintains internal temperatures suitable for blood product transport in extreme cold. Future research, including analyses of blood performances, is still needed to validate these results in more realistic operational conditions for use in cold environments.PMID:38362814 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17745 (Source: Transfusion)

A survey of low titer O whole blood use within the trauma quality improvement program registry
CONCLUSIONS: There was an increase in the number of facilities transfusing LTOWB between 2020 and 2021. The use of LTOWB is underutilized in children at centers that have it available. These findings inform the expansion of LTOWB use in trauma.PMID:38351716 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17746 (Source: Transfusion)

Successful treatment pure red cell aplasia after ABO major mismatched allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with avatrombopag and low dose rituximab
CONCLUSION: Low-dose rituximab and avatrombopag may be an effective treatment for patients with PRCA after major ABO-incompatible allo-HSCT. The patients should be treated at least 90 days post transplantation if conventional erythropoietin therapy fails.PMID:38351735 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17743 (Source: Transfusion)

The impact of blood donation deferral strategies on the eligibility of men who have sex with men and other sexual risk behavior in Australia
DISCUSSION: Changing the deferral criteria and sexual risk evaluation would lead to a higher proportion of GBM being eligible to donate blood. Knowledge of the current GBM deferral period is very low. Improved education about the current criteria and any future changes are required to improve blood donation rates.PMID:38348786 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17732 (Source: Transfusion)

Charting a path forward: Promising outcomes of convalescent plasma therapy in the care of severely B-cell depleted patients with persistent COVID-19
This study evaluated outcomes of B-cell depleted patients with persistent COVID-19 treated with CCP.STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This analysis included all consecutive severely B-cell depleted patients with persistent COVID-19, receiving CCP at Rambam between 01.2022-02.2023. Persistent COVID-19 was defined as the presence of symptoms for ≥14 days in patients with negative SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antibody test results.RESULTS: Twenty patients met inclusion criteria, 17 of whom had hematological malignancies, two suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and one had both. Twelve patients received anti-CD-20 treatment, one - CAR-T c...

Red cell transfusion thresholds in outpatients with myelodysplastic syndromes: Results of a pilot randomized trial RBC-ENHANCE
CONCLUSION: The results establish that policies for transfusion support can be delivered in practice at multiple hospitals, but further research is required to understand the full clinical effects and safety of liberal transfusion policies in MDS outpatients.PMID:38323704 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17721 (Source: Transfusion)
