Modified Mucosal Reconstruction in Unilateral Complete Cleft of Lip and Primary Palate: Surgical Technique and Practical Strategies
This article combines the previously-described C-flap mucosal flap and inferior turbinate flap with the newly-described lateral nasal mucosal flap for the mucosal repair of this uncommon subtype of deformity. Valuable practical strategies are offered to optimize the surgical execution within a limited pediatric intranasal surgical access, targeting to minimize tissue trauma and bleeding.PMID:38014431 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231212264 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Standardization of Videorecorded Speech Samples for Children with Cleft Palate: Methods to Facilitate High-Quality Speech Outcomes Data Collection
Cleft Palate Craniofac J. 2023 Nov 28:10556656231217645. doi: 10.1177/10556656231217645. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Collection of high-quality videorecorded speech samples is essential for speech outcomes research.SOLUTION: Cleft palate team SLPs were trained to collect standard videorecorded speech samples in the clinic setting across 20 sites in North America. Standard training and equipment was provided.WHAT WE DID THAT IS NEW: Quality management procedures were developed and utilized to verify video quality and protocol adherence. Over 97% of speech samples collected by trained SLPs met defined quality s...

Speech Outcomes of Buccal Myomucosal Flap Palatal Lengthening for Treatment of Velopharyngeal Insufficiency: Systematic Literature Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: BMF palatal lengthening provides adequate treatment for VPI in patients with large velopharyngeal gap size and a history of prior unsuccessful surgery.PMID:37993983 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231216834 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Interrater Reliability for Classifying Craniofacial Microsomia Severity: A Call for Objective Evaluation
CONCLUSIONS: The reliability of the ear and radiographic mandible scales of the PAT-CFM global classification were high, while the orbit, facial nerve and soft tissue subscales may have limited reliability. Research focusing on radiographic severity scores for hypoplasia of the orbits and soft tissues, as well as objective measures for overall facial hypoplasia using non-ionizing forms of imaging for early classification, are warranted.PMID:37993999 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231216557 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Current State of Clinical Trials Regarding Alveolar Bone Grafting
Cleft Palate Craniofac J. 2023 Nov 21:10556656231215164. doi: 10.1177/10556656231215164. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAlveolar ridge defects develop because of surgery, trauma, infection, or congenital malformations. Alveolar ridge defects can be resolved using an osseous replacement. The primary outcomes of osseous replacement are the maintenance of contour; the elimination of dead space, the reduction of postoperative infection; and the increase in bony and soft tissue healing. Recent research shows promising developments in dental bone grafts. This review presents the results of several clinical trials and provides upd...
