Whole Exome Sequencing Identifies Damaging Variants in Indonesians with Clefts
CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides additional evidence for the role of TULP4, SOS1, MTHFD1L and MMACHC genes in nsOFC development. This is the first time MMACHC is implicated in nsOFC development in humans.PMID:37876262 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231210085 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Craniometric and Aesthetic Outcomes in Craniosynostosis Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: There is no difference in CI outcomes between CVR and less invasive procedures. The majority of literature comparing craniometric and aesthetic outcomes between CVR and less invasive procedures shows equivocal results for sagittal synostosis. However, the heterogeneity of data for other craniosynostoses did not allow meta-analysis.PMID:37859464 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231204506 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Buccal Fat Pad in Primary and Secondary Cleft Palate Repair: A Systematic Review of the Literature
CONCLUSIONS: BFP appears to be associated with a favorable impact in fistula prevention and management, as well as in transverse maxillary growth. However, there is a high heterogeneity among studies, high risk of bias and overall low quality of evidence. More high-quality research with long-term follow-up is warranted.PMID:37853550 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231206238 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Mitigating Infectious Complications of Injection Pharyngoplasty with Calcium Hydroxyapatite for Velopharyngeal Insufficiency: Retropharyngeal Abscess and Osteomyelitis
Cleft Palate Craniofac J. 2023 Oct 17:10556656231207468. doi: 10.1177/10556656231207468. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVelopharyngeal insufficiency is a complex condition with various treatment options. In this case, a patient with a cleft palate who was treated for velopharyngeal insufficiency with calcium hydroxyapatite injection pharyngoplasty developed persistent cervical pain on postoperative day 6. CT imaging showed a hypodense structure in the right retropharyngeal tissue, and cultures tested positive for Streptococcus intermedius and Staphylococcus aureus. An MRI later revealed skull base osteomyelitis. The infecti...

Comprehensive Long-Term Outcomes Following Mandibular Distraction Osteogenesis
CONCLUSIONS: MDO shows highly favorable long-term respiratory, feeding, nerve, and scar outcomes in nonsyndromic patients, although permanent molar changes not precluding tooth viability are commonly seen. Patients with associated syndromes demonstrate respiratory and feeding benefits, but higher rates of dental and nerve abnormalities.PMID:37849290 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231206884 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Using "Real-World Data" to Study Cleft Lip/Palate Care: An Exploration of Speech Outcomes from a Multi-Center US Learning Health Network
CONCLUSIONS: This exploration of speech outcomes demonstrates the current ability of the cleft-specific registry to support cleft research efforts as a source of "real-world" data. Further work is focused on developing robust methodology for hypothesis-driven research and causal inference.PMID:37844605 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231207469 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Evaluating SWAG and Its Validity When Compared to 3D Imagery of Secondarily Grafted Cleft Sites
CONCLUSION: 2D SWAG systematically and non-significantly underestimated bone-fill. There was a significant correlation between 2D/3D methods. Bland-Altman analysis illustrated the similarity of the two methods. For comparisons of group (cleft treatment Centers') bone grafting outcomes, the 2D method may suffice as a proxy for the 3D method. However, with individual variation up to 40% in 2D estimates of actual 3D volume, 2D SWAG method cannot be used in place of 3D images.PMID:37844606 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231207570 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)
