Do Race and Socioeconomic Status Affect Date of Initial Presentation and Repair of Patients with Cleft lip  ± Palate and Head Shape Conditions?
CONCLUSIONS: Race and SES may play an important role in the delay of first presentation to plastic surgery clinic and subsequent repair for these patient populations. Further educational efforts must be provided to ensure equitable care. This single institutional study may serve to encourage other academic centers to analyze the timing of care for our pediatric patients.PMID:38073056 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231219417 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need for Detecting Subjects with Great Need for Orthognathic Surgery
Cleft Palate Craniofac J. 2023 Nov 30:10556656231216833. doi: 10.1177/10556656231216833. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIndex of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need (IOFTN) Identifies patients with greatest need for orthoganthic surgery. This systematic review looks into the available evidence on prevalence of patients with great treatment need (IOFTN 4&5) who had orthognathic surgery in previous studies. Literature search of the major electronic databases was carried out for articles published between 2014 and September 2023, looking for "Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need","Orthognathic Surgery","IOFTN...

Anatomical and Physiological Changes Following Primary Palatoplasty Using "The Buccal Flap Approach"
CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that adult males who received the DOZP + BF repair at the time of primary palatoplasty and no history of secondary speech surgery or orthognathic surgery present with a longer effective velar length and larger effective VP ratio in comparison to the non-cleft group. Future research is needed to compare patients with and without favorable outcomes from multiple surgical types to fully understand how surgical techniques alter the anatomy.PMID:38037274 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231215141 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)

Electromyographic Evaluation of Masticatory Muscle Activity in Individuals with and without Cleft Lip/Palate: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: According to our meta-analysis, cleft patients exhibited increased resting muscle activity but decreased activity during maximum bite force, indicating reduced efficiency of masticatory muscles compared to non-cleft patients. These differences can be attributed to anatomical variations, compensatory mechanisms, and previous treatments.PMID:38037351 | DOI:10.1177/10556656231201235 (Source: The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal)
