Sialic Acid in Human Milk and Infant Formulas in China: Concentration, Distribution, and Type
This study compared the concentrations, types, and distributions of sialic acid in human milk at different stages of the postnatal period with those in a range of infant formulas. Breast milk from mothers of healthy, full-term, and exclusively breastfed infants were collected on the 2nd (n=246), 7th (n=135), 30th (n=85), and 90th (n=48) day after birth. The sialic acid profiles of human milk, including their distribution, were analyzed and compared with 24 different infant formulas. Outcome of this observational study was the result of natural exposure. Only sialic acid of type Neu5Ac was detected in human milk. Total sial...

Association between sleep duration and quality with food intake, chrononutrition patterns, and weight gain during pregnancy
Br J Nutr. 2024 Jan 5:1-22. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002908. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTo analyse the association between sleep duration and quality with food intake, chrononutrition patterns, and weight gain during pregnancy. A prospective cohort study was conducted with 100 pregnant women. Data collection occurred once during each gestational trimester. The assessment of sleep quality and duration was performed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Food intake was assessed using three 24-hour recalls in each trimester. Body weight was measured during the three trimesters, and height was measured only once to calcu...

Associations of childhood diet quality scores with arterial stiffness and carotid artery intima-media thickness in adolescence/early adulthood: findings from the ALSPAC cohort
In conclusion, an Obesogenic dietary pattern in childhood (7-10 years) was related to increased arterial stiffness, while Mediterranean-style and anti-inflammatory diets were related to decreased arterial stiffness in adolescence. This highlights the importance of establishing healthy dietary habits early in life to protect against vascular damage.PMID:38178807 | DOI:10.1017/S0007114523002763 (Source: The British Journal of Nutrition)

Ultra-processed foods consumption among a US representative sample of middle-older adults: a cross-sectional analysis
Br J Nutr. 2024 Jan 4:1-28. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523003033. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study evaluated the association between ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and nutrient intake and identified the sociodemographic characteristics associated with UPF consumption among a nationally representative sample of middle-older adults. Dietary assessment was collected in 2013 using a validated food frequency questionnaire. The Nova system was used to classify food and drinks into UPFs. The percentage of dietary energy from UPFs was calculated and used throughout the analyses, and average nutrient intake across quintiles of UPFs ...

Trends in ultra-processed food availability and its association with diet-related noncommunicable disease health indicators in the Portuguese population
This study aims to evaluate trends of UPF availability in Portuguese population and its association with diet-related noncommunicable diseases (NCD) health indicators. This ecological study used data from the Household Budget Surveys conducted by the National Statistics Institute each 5 years within a national representative sample of households. The percentage of UPF was calculated based on the total daily amount of food and beverages available per capita (in grams). Data from the years 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005 were used, which were retrieved from DAFNE-Anemos Software. NCD age-standardized mortality, prevalence and inci...

Use of table sugar and non-caloric sweeteners in Brazil: associated factors and changes across a decade
This study evaluated changes in the use of sweeteners over one decade and the relationship between sociodemographics, diet, and weight status with the type of sweetener. Data came from the Brazilian National Dietary Surveys of 2008-2009 and 2017-2018, including ≥10-year-old individuals (n=32,749; n=44,744, respectively, after excluding pregnant and lactating women). The use of table sugar, non-caloric sweeteners [NCS], both, or none was reported through a specific question. Food consumption was assessed using two non-consecutive food records (2008-2009) and 24-hour recalls (2017-2018). For the last survey, means of energ...

Effect of fatty acid-enriched black soldier fly larvae meal combined with chitinase on the metabolic processes of Nile tilapia
Br J Nutr. 2024 Jan 2:1-46. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523003008. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aim of this study is to determine to what extent the addition of chitinase to black soldier fly (BSF) larval meal enriched or not with long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) could improve growth, protein digestion processes and gut microbial composition in Nile tilapia. Two different types of BSF meal were produced, in which larvae were reared on substrates formulated with vegetable ingredients (VGS) or marine fish offal (FOS). The BSF raised on VGS was enriched in α-linolenic acid-ALA while that raised on FOS was enri...

Breastfeeding as protective factor against bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants
Br J Nutr. 2024 Jan 2:1-24. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002982. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBreastfeeding is associated with fewer comorbidities in very low birth weight (VLBW) preterm infants. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) of VLBW infants is a multifactorial pathology in which nutritional aspects may be of special importance. The aim of this study is to determine, in a cohort of VLBW infants, whether breast milk nutrition is associated with a reduced prevalence and severity of BPD.A retrospective study was conducted to record the intake of mother's own milk (MOM), pasteurised donor human milk (DHM) or preterm formula mil...
