Validating nutrient selection for product-group-specific nutrient indices for use as functional units in life cycle assessment of foods
Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 12:1-23. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000709. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe ability to provide adequate nutrition is considered a key factor in evaluating the sustainability of foods and diets. Nutrient indices are used as functional units (FUs) in life cycle assessment of foods to include nutritional performance in the environmental assessment of a product. Several general and food group-specific nutrient indices exist but many lack validation, particularly when used as FU. In addition, the nutrient selection strategies and reference units for nutrient intake can vary considerably among studies. To vali...

Post-prandial tracer studies of protein and amino acid utilisation: what can they tell us about human amino acid and protein requirements?
Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 12:1-65. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000734. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNitrogen-balance, the principal methodology used to derive recommendations for human protein and amino-acid requirements, has been widely criticised, and calls for increased protein and amino-acid requirement recommendation have been made, often on the basis of post-prandial amino-acid tracer-kinetic studies of muscle protein synthesis, or of amino-acid oxidation. In each case, for such studies to inform about requirements over 24hrs or longer, it is arguable that their design and interpretation should take into account an understand...

Effect of different doses of camelina cake inclusion as a substitute of dietary soybean meal on growth performance and gut health of weaned pigs
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of different doses of CAM in substitution of soybean meal on the growth, health and gut health of weaned pigs. At 14 days post-weaning (d0), 64 piglets were assigned either to a standard diet or to a diet with 4%, 8% or 12% of CAM. Piglets were weighed weekly. At d7 and d28, faeces were collected for microbiota and polyamine and blood for reactive oxygen metabolites (ROMs) and thyroxine analysis. At d28, pigs were slaughtered; organs were weighed, pH was recorded on gut, colon was analysed for volatile fatty acid (VFAs) and jejunum was used for morphological and gene expression analy...

Longitudinal association between soft drink consumption and handgrip strength in adults: a prospective analysis from the Tianjin Chronic Low-Grade Systemic Inflammation and Health (TCLSIH) cohort study
Br J Nutr. 2024 Apr 11:1-8. doi: 10.1017/S0007114523002817. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSoft drink consumption has become a highly controversial public health issue. Given the pattern of consumption in China, sugar-sweetened beverage is the main type of soft drink consumed. Due to containing high levels of fructose, a soft drink may have a deleterious effect on handgrip strength (HGS) due to oxidative stress, inflammation and insulin resistance. However, few studies show an association between soft drink consumption and HGS in adults. We aimed to investigate the association between soft drink consumption and longitudinal...

The interaction effect of dietary selenium intake and the < em > IL10 < /em > rs1800871 polymorphism on the risk of colorectal cancer: a case-control study in Korea
Br J Nutr. 2024 Mar 21:1-10. doi: 10.1017/S0007114524000345. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe importance of Se in human health has received much attention due to its antioxidant properties when it is consumed at an appropriate level. However, the existing evidence is limited to obtain an effective conclusion for colorectal cancer (CRC). Notably, an adequate intake of Se was reported for Koreans. Furthermore, cytokine secretion and immune function may be affected by dietary Se. Our study aimed to explore whether Se potentially reduces CRC risk and whether the IL10 rs1800871 polymorphism has an effect on this association. W...
