Predictors of Venous Thromboembolism After Lung Cancer Resection
CONCLUSIONS: Because nonmodifiable risk factors (Black race, interstitial fibrosis, and advanced-stage disease) predominate in postoperative PE and VTE-associated mortality is increased, enhanced perioperative prophylactic measures should be considered in high-risk cohorts.PMID:38295925 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.01.005 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Volume Alone Does Not Predict Quality Outcomes in Hospitals Performing Pediatric Cardiac Surgery
CONCLUSIONS: This national, real-world, risk-adjusted volume outcome analysis highlights that volume alone may not be the sole arbiter to predict quality of pediatric cardiac surgery outcomes. Using case volume alone as a surrogate for quality may unfairly asperse high-performing, low-volume programs.PMID:38290594 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.01.006 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Thoracoabdominal Esophagectomy: Then and Now
CONCLUSIONS: When performed as the primary approach in high volumes, TAE can be performed with comparable outcomes to non-TAE with low morbidity. Present-day, we find TAE is most useful in patients with truncal obesity, prior abdominal operations, and locally advanced cardia tumors with potential for variable extent of resection.PMID:38290595 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2023.12.017 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Neoadjuvant vs Adjuvant Chemoimmunotherapy for Stage II-IIIB Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy confers a significant OS benefit over adjuvant chemoimmunotherapy for patients with resectable stage II-IIIB NSCLC. Although randomized trials are needed to confirm our findings, strong consideration should be given to administering neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy to patients who are predetermined to receive systemic treatment.PMID:38290596 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.01.004 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

An Analysis of Anemia, Transfusions and CABG Outcomes in the National STS Database
CONCLUSIONS: Preoperative anemia is common in CABG patients and is associated with increased postoperative risk of mortality, complications, and RBC transfusion. However, most of the effect of anemia on mortality is mediated through intraoperative RBC transfusion.PMID:38286201 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.01.009 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Age-Stratified Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement for Aortic Stenosis
CONCLUSIONS: SAVR volume in the transcatheter era has decreased substantially, particularly for patients ≥80 years old and for those with TAV. Younger patients with BAV have better-than-expected outcomes, which should be carefully considered during shared-decision making in the treatment of AS. SAVR should remain the preferred therapy in this population.PMID:38286202 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.01.013 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

The Society of Thoracic Surgeons 2023 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Surgical Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation
Ann Thorac Surg. 2024 Jan 27:S0003-4975(24)00057-2. doi: 10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.01.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Society of Thoracic Surgeons 2023 clinical practice guidelines for the surgical management of atrial fibrillation incorporate the most recent evidence for surgical ablation and left atrial appendage occlusion in different clinical scenarios. Substantial new evidence regarding the risks and benefits of surgical left atrial appendage occlusion and the long-term benefits of surgical ablation has been produced in the last five years. In comparison to the 2017 clinical practice guideline, the current upda...

Disparities and Underutilization of Surgery for Early Stage Small Cell Lung Cancer
CONCLUSIONS: Surgical treatment for Stage I SCLC remains under-utilized and our study identifies significant associated factors. The recognition of these factors may help patients overcome barriers to receiving recommended treatments, improve guideline adherence, and overall quality of care for Stage I SCLC patients.PMID:38281575 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.01.012 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

A Multicenter Retrospective Case-Control Study on Simple vs Extended Sleeve Lobectomies
