Wedge Resection Outcomes: A Comparison of Video-Assisted and Robotic-Assisted Wedge Resections
CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the VATS approach, wedge resections via RVATS for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer were more likely to be associated with increased lymph nodes resected. This data may support increased utilization of RVATS for wedge resections.PMID:38360345 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.02.010 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Impact of Early Tracheostomy Following Lung Transplantation: A National Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The present study supports the safety of early tracheostomy among lung transplant recipients and highlights several potential benefits. Among appropriately selected patients, tracheostomy placement prior to postoperative day 8 may facilitate early discharge, lower costs, and reduced odds of posttransplant infection.PMID:38360346 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.02.013 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Factors affecting late atrial fibrillation and its association with coronary artery bypass outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with advanced age, a lower left-ventricular ejection fraction, and POAF are more likely to have late/recurrent clinical AF. Albeit counterintuitive, late/recurrent AF was not independently associated with worse mid-term post-CABG outcomes. These observations need to be further elucidated in larger-scale studies and interpreted in the context of a developing country with limited resources for late AF surveillance.PMID:38360338 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.02.007 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Valve-Sparing Aortic Root Replacement State of the Art Review Part I: Anatomy and Physiology
Ann Thorac Surg. 2024 Feb 13:S0003-4975(24)00115-2. doi: 10.1016/j.athoracsur.2023.12.018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAortic valve disease is common and valve-preserving operations are preferred whenever possible. Valve-sparing aortic root replacement (VSRR) has become an important tool for managing aortic root pathology in children and adults. The learning curve for this operation is challenging but with increasing experience and technical modifications, early and late outcomes continue to improve. Durable long term results vary based on underlying anatomy, pathology, and patient selection, and surgeon expertise. The f...

Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Life Support Use in Acute Pulmonary Embolism Shows Favorable Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: Patients undergoing VA-ECLS for acute PE have higher odds of survival to hospital discharge compared to those supported for other indications. Additionally, VA-ECLS in this population is associated with less cardiovascular and renal complications but higher mechanical complications.PMID:38360341 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.02.008 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Incidence of acute thrombosis after surgical left atrial appendage occlusion for atrial fibrillation
CONCLUSIONS: Thrombosis can occur after surgical LAA occlusion. Although the clinical significance is yet unclear, it may be reasonable to continue anticoagulation therapy for the first two days of the acute postoperative period.PMID:38360343 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.02.012 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Long-Term Outcomes After Interrupted Aortic Arch Repair
CONCLUSIONS: Staged repair, type B IAA and need for LVOTO intervention during initial hospitalization for repair are associated with high risk of death out to 30 years. Survival outcomes are improving, but further efforts need to minimize staged approach and risks associated with LVOTO relief procedures.PMID:38360344 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2024.02.009 (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)
