Outcomes Associated With Unplanned Interstage Cardiac Interventions After Norwood Palliation
This study describes the risk factors for and outcomes after unplanned surgical and catheter-based interstage cardiac interventions.MethodsParticipants in the National Pediatric Cardiology Quality Improvement Collaborative registry discharged from the hospital after S1P between 2008 and 2016 were studied. Variables at S1P, interstage, and at stage 2 palliation (S2P) hospitalizations were examined. Multivariable logistic regression was used to compare those who had an unplanned interstage intervention to those who did not.ResultsOf 1994 participants from 60 programs, 343 (17.1%) had at least 1 unplanned interstage intervent...

Late Survival and Patient-Perceived Health Status of the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society dextro-Transposition of the Great Arteries Cohort
ConclusionsArterial switch patients have a lower risk of premature death and better FHS than those with an atrial switch. Increased surveillance in atrial switch patients is warranted because of their increased risk of late death. Presence of symptoms, pacemaker, and lack of employment are associated with reduced FHS. Impact of the Opioid Epidemic on Lung Transplantation: Donor, Recipient, and Discard Characteristics
ConclusionsRates of ODD use in lung transplant have increased in accordance with the opioid epidemic, but there remains a significant pool of ODD pulmonary allografts with favorable characteristics that are discarded. With no significant difference in survival between ODD and non-ODD recipients, further expansion of this donor pool may be appropriate, and pulmonary allografts should not be discarded based solely on ODD status. Postintubation Tracheal Stenosis: Management and Results 1993 to 2017
ConclusionsDespite advances in care postintubation tracheal stenosis remains a challenging problem. Laryngotracheal resection and tracheostomy lead to worse outcomes. Excellent surgical results can be obtained for postintubation tracheal stenosis. Good results require careful evaluation, management of comorbid conditions, meticulous technique, minimizing tension, and preservation of blood supply. (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

Impact of Donor Brain Death Duration on Outcomes After Lung Transplantation
ConclusionsDonor BDD is not associated with posttransplant survival or primary graft dysfunction. Long donor BDD, however, is associated with a decreased risk for acute rejection and improved BOS-free survival. Therefore, lung allografts from donors with a prolonged length of time from brain death until explant should not be viewed less favorably by donor selection centers.Visual Abstract (Source: The Annals of Thoracic Surgery)

TAVR After Prior Mitral Valve Surgery: Results from the Transcatheter Valve Therapy Registry.
varia JE, Herrmann H, Szeto WY, Carroll JD, Mack M Abstract BACKGROUND: Due to perceived technical challenges, patients with previous surgical mitral valve repair or replacement (SMVR) have been excluded from most transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) trials. Our objective was to compare the 30-day and 1-year outcomes of TAVR in patients with and without prior SMVR. METHODS: In a retrospective review of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) and American College of Cardiology (ACC) Transcatheter Valve Therapy (TVT) Registry, we compared 1,097 patients with prior SMVR to 46,327 without prior SMVR who u...

Prognostic Impact of Postoperative Skeletal Muscle Decrease in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.
Abstract BACKGROUND: Preoperative skeletal muscle loss was reported to be associated with a postoperative poor prognosis in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. METHODS: The data analyzed 204 NSCLC patients who had undergone curative lung resection and whose preoperative and postoperative (1 year) computed tomography images were available. The skeletal muscle area (SMA) at the 12th thoracic vertebra level was used. Post/pre ratio was def...

ConclusionsIncrease in CPB duration has a strong linear association with increase in PPCC following stage one single-ventricle reconstruction.
