Outcome prediction from post-injury resilience in patients with TBI.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the extent to which 1- and 2-year outcomes after traumatic brain injury (TBI) are predicted by resilience. Research Method/Design: This was an observational, longitudinal study of persons (n = 158) with moderate or severe TBI who completed both 1- and 2-year outcome assessments. Outcomes included anxiety (Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7), depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-9), life satisfaction (Satisfaction with Life Scale), substance misuse, and return-to-work measures. The Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale was used to assess resilience at 3 or 6 months after injury. Results...

An evaluation of the behavioral inhibition and behavioral activation system (BIS-BAS) model of pain.
This study evaluated the behavioral inhibition and activation system (BIS-BAS) model of pain. Frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) as a possible neurophysiological correlate of the BIS-BAS was also explored, as was the role of personality factors. Research Method: A cross-sectional study was completed at the University of (The University of Queensland). The sample was N = 69 adults with chronic low back pain. Self-report and data were collected as a part of a treatment outcome study. Correlational analyses were conducted between theorized BIS-BAS-related measures of cognitions (catastrophizing, control beliefs), emotion (depressi...

Microaggressions experienced by people with multiple sclerosis in the workplace: An exploratory study using Sue’s taxonomy.
This study used a community-based participatory research approach and qualitative design. Adults with MS (N = 29) with current or recent work experience were recruited to participate in a focus group study. Eight focus groups were conducted and transcripts analyzed using qualitative content analysis to generate themes and subthemes. Study protocol, coding, and interpretations underwent a validity check by an external advisory group consisting of researchers in the field and individuals with MS. Results: Almost all of the participants in this study reported experiencing some form of microaggressions in their workplace. Seve...

Factor analysis of the Caregiver Appraisal Scale in military TBI.
Conclusions/Implications: Military and civilian caregivers have overlapping and differing concerns. The findings support a 37-item four-factor model of caregiving stress appraisal that has the potential for use as an outcome measure for developing caregiver interventions. It may be as useful to administer a reduced 37-item measure of the CAS to caregivers as the original 47-item measure, but further development is required. Factors related to perceived burden among caregivers of service members/veterans following TBI.
Purpose/Objective: To examine factors related to perceived caregiving burden in a sample of caregivers assisting service members and veterans (SMVs) across four areas: SMV injury and health status; caregiver life circumstances; caregiver duty and responsibilities; and caregiver needs. Research Method/Design: Participants were 214 caregivers (95.8% female; 86.0% spouse/partner; Age: M = 38.6 years [SD = 10.4]) of SMVs who sustained a mild, moderate, severe, or penetrating traumatic brain injury (TBI). Caregivers were recruited from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and via community outreach. Participants complet...

“I battle pain every single day”: Pain-related illness intrusiveness among persons with multiple sclerosis.
This study aimed to determine the extent to which PwMS experience pain as a particularly intrusive problem among the totality of their experience of MS-related challenges and to examine how cognitive and affective factors, including resiliency, are associated with PwMS’s pain-related illness intrusiveness. Method: Participants (N = 161) were PwMS with at least mild pain who were recruited through the North American Research Committee on Multiple Sclerosis Registry for this cross-sectional study. Participants completed the Illness Intrusiveness Ratings Scale twice regarding their (a) MS and (b) pain. Multiple regression a...

Discrimination at every turn: An intersectional ecological lens for rehabilitation.
Purpose: Intersectionality has been increasingly prevalent in the rehabilitation literature. It has been warned, however, that there can be a flattening of intersectionality should social scientists exclude the various systemic paradigms which contribute to, and sustain, marginalization. In seeking a remedy to this issue, the article establishes an intersectional ecological framework for use in rehabilitation psychology. Using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, the article posits a framework both visually and conceptually, that can be used to discuss the intersection of identities in each system. Design: The cur...

Involvement in compensation litigation and outcome from an online pain management program.
Conclusions: Current involvement in compensation litigation was associated with lower treatment completion and less symptom improvement. Nevertheless, the positive findings have significant implications for people involved in workers’ compensation and other litigation who report pain as one of their symptoms. #SaytheWord: A disability culture commentary on the erasure of “disability”.
Conclusion: The field of psychology has a rich tradition of appreciation of cultural diversity and individual difference; yet, disability has largely been left out of these efforts. The disability movement is moving toward the status of a diverse cultural group with a social justice agenda parallel to those of other marginalized communities. The authors posit that psychology must play a stronger role in advancing the human rights of people with disabilities.
