Disability affirmation and acceptance predict hope among adults with physical disabilities.
Purpose/Objective: Positive disability identity has been proposed as a protective factor against disability-related stressors. Personal disability identity (PDI) refers to positive self-concept as a person with a disability. The most widely used measure of PDI captures disability affirmation and disability acceptance (Hahn & Belt, 2004). The current study examined the association between PDI (i.e., acceptance and affirmation) and hope (i.e., pathways and agency). Hope is defined as a process of thinking about one’s goals, including motivation to pursue goals (agency) and ways to achieve goals (pathways; Snyder et al., 19...

Self-regulatory efficacy for exercise in cardiac rehabilitation: Review and recommendations for measurement.
Conclusion: Since 2008, an increase in studies examining SRE and CR exercise was observed. To advance SRE and CR exercise research, measurement and research quality improvements are recommended that have implications for future mediation and CR intervention assessment. Interpersonal violence against people with disabilities: Additional concerns and considerations in the COVID-19 pandemic.
Conclusions/Implications: The COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences enhance the already increased risk for abuse among people with disabilities. Providers who work with individuals with disabilities should address these issues at both the individual client and systems levels. Relationship adjustment and quality among sexual minority persons with disabilities.
Purpose/Objective: Little is known about romantic relationship adjustment or perceptions of relationship quality (e.g., commitment and trust) among sexual minority persons with disabilities. The purpose of this study was to explore if collective self-esteem, disability adjustment, attachment styles, and cultural humility served as unique correlates and predictors of relationship adjustment and relationship quality among sexual minority persons (e.g., lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer) with disabilities. Method: Ninety-two participants identifying as sexual minority persons living with a variety of disabilities (e.g., physical,...

Feasibility and acceptability of a single-session, videoconference-delivered group intervention for pain in multiple sclerosis.
Conclusions/Implications: This brief, highly accessible intervention targeting pain coping in individuals with early MS is feasible and acceptable. Further research is needed to better understand the effectiveness of the intervention both immediately and in positively impacting future coping in this population. Sleep impairment is related to health-related quality of life among caregivers of lower-functioning traumatic brain injury survivors.
Conclusions: Interventions to improve caregiver sleep and HRQOL should consider both psychosocial and environmental factors (i.e., factors related to the person with the TBI). (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Rehabilitation Psychology)

Mediational models of pain, mental health, and functioning in individuals with burn injury.
Conclusions/Implications: Although the cross-sectional findings are unable to conclude causality, individuals with burn injury experiencing pain may benefit from a biopsychosocial treatment approach while also addressing symptoms of depression and anxiety. Driving after pediatric traumatic brain injury: Impact of distraction and executive functioning.
Conclusions: A history of pediatric TBI did not specifically impact driving performance independent of EF, with EF playing a central role in functioning across domains of driving performance. Consistent effect of EF suggests that deficits in driving performance may be associated with EF specifically, with individuals with EF difficulties following TBI at greater risk for poor driving performance. Health literacy, health outcomes, and the caregiver role in traumatic brain injury.
Purpose/Objective: The purpose of this study is to estimate the occurrence of low health literacy among caregivers of people with traumatic brain injury (TBI), and to evaluate associations of health literacy with caregiver health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and perceptions of the caregiving role. Research Method/Design: The TBI-CareQOL measurement system assesses important self-reported outcomes for caregivers of civilians or service members/veterans (SMVs) with TBI. The validation phase included the Health Literacy Assessment Using Talking Touchscreen Technology (Health LiTT) measure. Multivariable regression evaluate...

Behavioral and emotional quality of life of patients undergoing inpatient geriatric rehabilitation.
Conclusions: During geriatric rehabilitation, significant progress can be made regarding QoL. The results indicate that the influence of physical progress on affective improvements is conveyed through self-perceptions of health, showing the importance of self-perceptions of health for emotional QoL in geriatric rehabilitation. Do emotional distress and functional problems in persons with traumatic brain injury contribute to perceived sleep-related impairment in caregivers?
Conclusions: In both caregivers of civilians and SMVs with TBI, characteristics of the PwTBI were related to perceived caregiver sleep-related impairment. These preliminary data can inform future research with larger samples that examine the impact of multiple characteristics of the caregiver and care recipient on caregiver sleep. Findings highlight the potential importance of considering the dynamics of the dyad in rehabilitation programming not only for the PwTBI but for caregivers as well. Partners’ attachment styles and overprotective support as predictors of patient outcomes in cardiac rehabilitation.
This study investigates whether the adult attachment styles of support partners in a cardiac rehabilitation context predict their use of overprotective support strategies, and whether such overprotection in turn predicts lower self-efficacy and poorer program attendance in cardiac rehabilitation patients. Research Method: Participants were 69 partner–patient dyads, mostly older adults (mean age = 65 years) in long-term relationships (M = 35 years). During the first week of a 10-week cardiac rehabilitation program in a midsized rural hospital, participants completed self-report questionnaires that were used to assess part...
