Predicting veteran health-related quality of life following mild traumatic brain injury.
Purpose/Objective: To examine health-related quality of life (HR-QOL) in Veterans with and without a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and investigate correlates and predictors of HR-QOL within the mTBI sample. Research Method/Design: Participants (N = 144) included 81 Veterans with a history of mTBI and 63 Veteran controls (VCs) without a history of mTBI. Primary outcomes of interest were the 8 subscales of the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36). Participants also completed questionnaires measuring combat exposure, depressive and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and neurobehavioral symptoms. Resul...

Sleep apnea and posttraumatic stress after traumatic brain injury (TBI): A Veterans Affairs TBI Model Systems study.
Objective: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a complex health problem in military veterans and service members (V/SM) that often co-occurs with psychological and medical conditions such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sleep apnea. We aimed to examine if sleep apnea is associated with the presence and severity of PTSD in V/SM with TBI of all severities. Research Method: The study examined participants at varying times since their TBI (N = 602) enrolled in the Veterans Affairs TBI Model Systems database. Frequency of self-reported sleep apnea diagnosis was calculated in a cross-sectional sample. Prevalence of co-oc...

Suicidal ideation after acute traumatic brain injury: A longitudinal actor-partner interdependence model of patients and caregivers in Latin America.
Conclusions/Implications: Clinicians and rehabilitation specialists can use these findings to inform suicide risk assessment by expanding these practices to caregivers of patients who endorsed suicidal ideation. Interventions after TBI should incorporate caregivers given this study showed significant interdependence of suicidality between patients and caregivers. Psychometric evaluation of the Hopkins Rehabilitation Engagement Rating Scale in postacute physical therapy services.
Purpose/Objective: Evaluate the reliability and validity of the Hopkins Rehabilitation Engagement Scale (HRERS) in a postacute rehabilitation sample. We hypothesized that HRERS items would comprise a single factor, and would demonstrate adequate internal consistency and temporal stability, and significant relationships with key constructs. Research Method and Design: Retrospective medical record review between 2016 and 2017 of older veterans (N = 107) admitted to a community living center postacute care (CLC-PAC) rehabilitation hospital unit to address targeted physical therapy rehabilitation goals. Inclusion criteria incl...

Exploring disability identity with adolescents.
Conclusions/Implications: These findings suggest that adolescents with disabilities are engaging in a multifaceted meaning-making process to develop a sense of disability identity. Rehabilitation Psychologists and other practitioners can support disabled adolescents by helping them to discuss and develop a positive disability identity. Furthermore, practitioners can help disabled adolescents successfully develop their disability identity in a variety of different settings and contexts. The role of psychological flexibility in recovery following mild traumatic brain injury.
Conclusions/Implications: These results suggest that psychological flexibility is a psychological mechanism that contributes to recovery outcomes in individuals with mTBI and could therefore be an important treatment target in mTBI interventions. Psychological interventions for reducing fear avoidance beliefs among people with chronic back pain.
Conclusion: CBT and PE interventions are mainly used to address FAB among people with CBP. However, there is still inconsistent evidence as to which psychological interventions are most effective to treat FAB among people with CBP. COVID-19 and chronic disease patients: Perceived stress, worry, and emotional regulation strategies.
Conclusions: The results highlight the importance of considering expressive suppression, levels of worry about COVID-19, and changes to scheduled medical treatment. Screening procedures based on these factors may be useful for identifying individuals with a preexisting medical condition at higher risk of distress, in order to offer them specific and remotely delivered psychological support. Enhancing motor learning in people with stroke via memory reactivation during sleep.
Conclusions: This study suggests that TMR may enhance motor learning after stroke. Future studies should investigate whether TMR can lead to improvements of the paretic upper extremity during clinically based rehabilitation interventions. Attachment avoidance and health-related quality of life: Mediating effects of avoidant coping and health self-efficacy in a rehabilitation sample.
Conclusions/Implications: Results suggest that individuals high on attachment avoidance may require additional support to move toward psychosocial adaptation. Further research examining the role of attachment insecurity dimensions in adaptation to CID is warranted and should include longitudinal designs to replicate these findings. Linguistic indicators of chronic pain acceptance in individuals with spinal cord injury.
Conclusions: Findings suggest that pain acceptance is associated with unique linguistic patterns that can be identified in natural word use among individuals with SCI and chronic pain. Future research to further investigate linguistic indicators of pain acceptance and other clinically relevant pain constructs is warranted and could advance theoretical models of pain adaptation and clinical approaches to treating pain. Ecological momentary assessment of affect in context after traumatic brain injury.
Conclusions: EMA can provide unique information on the effects of social context and activity on mood in TBI. Clinicians should consider negative as well as positive affect associated with increasing social participation. Effectiveness of remote interventions in improving caregiver stress outcomes for caregivers of people with traumatic brain injury.
Conclusion: Results from this systematic review indicate that online interventions can be as effective as in-person interventions in reducing the symptoms of caregiver stress for caregivers of people with TBI. Implications for practice, research, and policy are discussed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Rehabilitation Psychology)

Perceived injustice in multiple sclerosis: An initial, exploratory study.
Conclusions/Implications: The IEQ is a reliable and valid measure of PI in MS. Physical manifestations of MS are primarily associated with PI, and negative associations were observed between physical activity and IEQ scores. Physical activity may increase self-efficacy and counteract cognitions of permanent disability and frustration concerning limitations that are associated with PI. A qualitative comparison of mindfulness meditation, cognitive therapy, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for chronic low back pain.
Conclusions/Implications: These first-person accounts provide insight into those participant-identified therapeutic procedures and change processes that were most valued by individuals completing cognitive and mindfulness-based interventions for CLBP. Early identification of treatment barriers and strategies to overcome these barriers is necessary. Further, therapeutic rapport and training participants in coping skills they themselves can use were critical, as was engendering changes in cognitive, emotional, and behavioral mechanisms.
