Mindfulness training for emotion dysregulation in multiple sclerosis: A pilot randomized controlled trial.
Conclusions: Our pilot study provides preliminary support for MBT to reduce self-reported emotion dysregulation in PwMS. Given the widespread prevalence of mental health disturbances in this population, MBT can serve as a promising rehabilitation tool for PwMS (clinicaltrials.gov # NCT02717429). Pain interference and quality of life in combat veterans: Examining the roles of posttraumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury, and sleep quality.
Objective: The goal of this study was to examine the associations among posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), sleep quality, pain interference, and quality of life in combat veterans. Method: Veterans (N = 289, 86.51% male) completed the Mid-Atlantic MIRECC Assessment of Traumatic Brain Injury, the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM–5, and measures of sleep quality, pain interference, and quality of life. Results: Hierarchical linear regressions evaluated associations between PTSD severity, deployment TBI severity, sleep quality, and the outcomes of pain interference and quality of li...

Factors associated with employment and work perception in combat-exposed veterans.
Conclusions/Implications: Although preliminary, results suggest that perception of work ability is an important factor to consider when evaluating employment-related outcomes in veterans. Moreover, results indicate that while there is some overlap among the variables associated with employment status and perception of work ability, additional variables are linked with perception of work ability. Taken together, these findings suggest that perception of one’s ability to work and factors that influence it may be particularly important treatment targets in the veteran population. Promoting equity at the population level: Putting the foundational principles into practice through disability advocacy.
Rehabilitation psychology is based on foundational principles that can guide us toward health equity among disabled and nondisabled communities. We summarize the literature on disparities in the disability community and underscore the urgency to address underlying inequities to eliminate disparities. We include examples of population-level interventions that promote equity in the disability community. We conclude with a call for a broader mission for rehabilitation psychologists based on the field’s foundational principles, and outline emerging opportunities to widen our impact and advance equity. Our foundational princi...

Neurobehavioral symptoms by gender and experience of nightmares after traumatic brain injury.
Purpose/Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess how neurobehavioral symptoms following traumatic brain injury (TBI) may differ based on gender and the experience of nightmares. Research Method/Design: This cross-sectional study of community-dwelling adults ≥ 3 months post-TBI (n = 110) assessed differences in neurobehavioral symptoms between women (n = 41) and men (n = 69) by experience of nightmares. Outcome measures included the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, and Behavioral Assessment Screening Tool subscales for negative affect, substance abuse, executive functioning, fatigue...

Factor structure and invariance of the pain catastrophizing scale in patients with chronic pain and their spouses.
Conclusions: The findings of the current study showed that the 2-factor oblique model is the best fit in both samples (i.e., patients with chronic pain and their spouses). Therefore, it can be suggested that these versions can be used among patients and their spouses and the findings regarding them can be compared. Differentiating state versus trait pain catastrophizing.
This study investigated the type and recency of the pain experience recalled (i.e., pain referent) by a healthy group and a chronic/recurrent pain group when they responded to the trait version of the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS). We also aimed to disentangle the influence of trait personality factors and state oriented pain-related cognitive processes on PCS scores. Research Method/Design: A cross-sectional online survey was administered. Participants who reported chronic/recurrent pain comprised the pain group (N = 153) and those not reporting a pain condition comprised the healthy group (N = 120). Results: A sensory...

Development and initial validation of the Clinician Attitude Toward Violence Affecting Women With Disabilities (CAVAWD) Scale: An exploratory study.
Conclusion: Further testing is needed; however, at present, the CAVAWD may be potentially useful to evaluate and measure counselor attitude, competency, and understanding of violence affecting women with disabilities. Psychometric properties of the SAFE-D: A measure of acculturative stress among deaf undergraduate students.
Conclusions/Implications: Levels of acculturative stress in the current sample were close to those reported among late immigrant and English as a Second Language undergraduate students. The 4 factors did not match those of the original SAFE scale but reflected a bidirectional model of acculturative stress unique to deaf individuals. These findings suggest that acculturative stress is a serious concern among deaf undergraduate students and that the SAFE-D can be used to assess deaf acculturative stress in this population. Behavioral activation and behavioral inhibition: An examination of function in chronic pain.
Conclusions: As hypothesized, BIS and BAS both contributed to pain-related function; however, BIS displayed stronger associations with both pain interference and positive function despite pain. Thus, the hypothesis that BIS-BAS relationships would differ based on the nature of the functional outcome (BIS resulting in poorer function because of pain and BAS better function despite pain) was only partially supported. Findings of the current study suggest the role of BIS in chronic pain may be more pervasive across functional outcomes. Explicit and implicit disability attitudes of healthcare providers.
Conclusions/Implications: This study revealed that despite a majority of providers self-reporting not being biased against people with disabilities, implicitly, the overwhelming majority were biased. This study’s findings can be used to better understand how provider disability bias can contribute to inequitable health care access and health outcomes for people with disabilities. The relationship between Parkinson’s disease symptoms and caregiver quality of life.
Conclusions: PD symptoms are robustly related to caregiver QOL, with mobility and nonmotor symptoms as the primary drivers of this relationship. Interventions for PD caregivers should include strategies for managing mobility and nonmotor symptoms, as well as their QOL effects on caregivers. Development of a resilience item bank and short forms.
Conclusions: The findings support reliability and validity of the University of Washington Resilience Scale (UWRS) for assessing resilience in any population, including individuals with chronic health conditions or disabilities. It can be administered using computerized adaptive testing or by short forms. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Rehabilitation Psychology)

Assessing vigilance in caregivers after traumatic brain injury: TBI-CareQOL Caregiver Vigilance.
Conclusions: The new TBI-CareQOL Caregiver Vigilance computer adaptive test and corresponding 6-item short form were developed using established rigorous measurement development standards, providing the first self-report measure to evaluate caregiver vigilance. This development work indicates that this measure exhibits strong psychometric properties. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Rehabilitation Psychology)

Severity of military traumatic brain injury influences caregiver health-related quality of life.
Conclusions/Implications: It is important that caregivers of SMVs receive long-term support in their caregiving and parenting roles. Further work is required to understand the challenges caregivers experience in accessing services they need and how to effectively meet their needs across the care continuum.
