Psychology predoctoral internship match rates by disability type.
Conclusion: Disabled internship applicants experience consistent, negative disparities internship match rates compared with their nondisabled peers. Psychologists must take action to identify and ameliorate the causes of these disparities and address the chronic underrepresentation of psychologists with disabilities. Bidirectional effects of behavior problems and parenting behaviors following adolescent brain injury.
Conclusions/Implications: The bidirectional relationship between effective communication and adolescent externalizing behavior suggests a transactional model in pediatric TBI in which effective communication leads to reduced adolescent behavior problems and reduced behavior problems lead to improved communication over time. Findings yielded stronger evidence for parenting effects as compared to adolescent behavior effects, providing further support for clinical interventions targeting parent–adolescent interactions following TBI. Self-compassion mediates stigma for parents of transition-age youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
This study tests the hypothesis that self-compassion is a mediator between courtesy stigma and parents’ psychosocial adjustment. Method: One hundred parents of transition-age youth with IDDs completed a cross-sectional survey assessing courtesy stigma, self-compassion, life satisfaction, and depression. Study information was disseminated via community organizations, and participants self-selected to participate. “PROCESS” macro with 5,000 bootstrapped samples was used to test self-compassion as a mediator between courtesy stigma and parents’ life satisfaction (Satisfaction With Life Scale) and depressive symptoms (...

Motivators, goal setting, and helpful feedback for weight management among individuals with spinal cord injury.
Conclusions/Implications: Our work identified what drives weight management in individuals with SCI, what is important to them in terms of goal setting, and what feedback they would find helpful. These findings may be used in intervention planning and program development to facilitate participation and behavior modification. Weight management efforts and interventions are needed that 1) incorporate motivators for weight management that are important to individuals with SCI; 2) help them identify actionable process and performance goals to facilitate achievement of self-identified meaningful outcome goals; and 3) provide pe...

Psychological interventions with older adults during inpatient postacute rehabilitation: A systematic review.
Conclusions: Most of the included studies were limited by small sample size and high risk of bias. Thus, currently, there is insufficient evidence to support the effectiveness of psychological interventions for depression or anxiety among older adults during an inpatient postacute care stay. The authors offer a detailed discussion of methodological limitations, empirical gaps, and future directions to develop this body of literature. Perceptions of ableist microaggressions among target and nontarget groups.
This study investigated perceptions of microaggressions and neutral interactions, and influencing factors. Research Methods: Participants were 141 self-identified people with a physical or sensory disability, chronic illness, and/or medical condition (target group) and 166 people without these disabilities (nontarget group). Participants read 20 brief vignettes depicting ableist and neutral scenarios via an online survey. Participants indicated whether or not each vignette reflected an ableist microaggression and rated its harmfulness. Participants also completed measures of reported experiences of ableist microaggressions...

Coping with stigmatization and discrimination related to blindness and low vision.
Conclusions/Implications: This study highlights the significance of personal and contextual aspects of coping with stigma and discrimination by demonstrating the complex nature of how people who are blind or have low vision cope with stigma. Coping efforts might be tenuous and require cognitive and/or behavioral skills and psychological resources and as such, individuals experiencing stigma might benefit from interventions aimed at improving coping skills and resources, such as self-advocacy, assertion, or positive reinterpretation. Psychological mediators of avoidance and endurance behavior after concussion.
Conclusions: Results supported the catastrophizing-avoidance pathway in concussion, but not the thought-suppression-endurance or self-distraction-endurance pathways. Therefore, catastrophic thinking about concussion symptoms may be an appropriate treatment target for individuals who exhibit fear-avoidance behavior. Further research is needed to establish whether thought suppression and self-distraction are relevant for interventions aimed at reducing excessive endurance behavior. The role of specific sources of social support on postinjury psychological symptoms.
Conclusions/Implications: MVC-related injuries are robust contributors to psychological sequelae. These findings extend prior work by highlighting that perceived social support, particularly from significant others and friends, provides unique information regarding the development of psychological symptoms following predominantly mild MVC-related injuries. This data may serve to inform recovery expectations. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2021 APA, all rights reserved) (Source: Rehabilitation Psychology)

Sociodemographic factors and health-related, neuropsychological, and psychosocial functioning in youth with spina bifida.
Conclusions: Examining a range of sociodemographic factors is warranted. Sociodemographic risk is linked to poorer outcomes for some risk indicators but similar or better outcomes for others. Results have implications for delivering evidence-based, diversity-sensitive clinical care to youth with SB. Examining the potential applicability of the minority stress model for explaining suicidality in individuals with disabilities.
Conclusions: The minority stress model is potentially useful for conceptualizing the higher rates of suicidality among people with disabilities, both alone and in conjunction with other models of suicide, in a manner that addresses disability justice and the experiences and effects of chronic, pervasive marginalization. Recommendations for research, and policy, including strategies for addressing both internalized ableism and disability-related discrimination and harassment, are provided. Perceived discrimination and blood pressure in individuals aging with traumatic brain injury.
Conclusions/Implications: Discrimination, which may arise from multiple sources of bias (e.g., related to race, disability), is associated with vascular burden. These findings suggest that patients’ experiences of discrimination should be addressed as a factor that contributes to health and well-being in brain injury rehabilitation.
