Association of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with constipation: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005 –2010)
This study seeks to explain the relationship between PFAS and constipation. MethodsA total of 2945 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005 –2010 were included in this study. Constipation was defined using the Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS) based on stool consistency. The relationship between PFAS and constipation was evaluated using weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis, while adjusting for confound ing variables. ResultsThe weighted median concentration of total PFAS ( ΣPFAS) was significantly lower in individuals with constipation (19.01 μg/L) ...

Assessing equity in the uptake of remote foot temperature monitoring in a large integrated US healthcare system
ConclusionsRTM growth was concentrated in a small number of higher-resourced facilities, with evidence of lower enrollment among those who were Black and lived farther from specialty care. Future studies are needed to identify and address barriers to uptake of new interventions like RTM to prevent exacerbating existing ulceration and amputation disparities. (Source: PLoS One)

E2EE enhanced patient-centric blockchain-based system for EHR management
by Alaa Haddad, Mohamed Hadi Habaebi, Elfatih A. A. Elsheikh, Md. Rafiqul Islam, Suriza Ahmad Zabidi, Fakher Eldin M. Suliman To secure sensitive medical records in the healthcare clouds, this paper proposes an End-to-End Encryption (E2EE) to enhance a patient-centric blockchain-based system for electronic health record (EHR) management. The suggested system with a focus on the patient enables individuals to oversee thei r medical records within various involved parties by authorizing or withdrawing permission for access to their records. Utilizing the inter-planetary file system (IPFS) for record storage is chosen due to...

The retinoid X receptor has a critical role in synthetic rexinoid-induced increase in cellular all- < i > trans < /i > -retinoic acid
by Olga V. Belyaeva, Alla V. Klyuyeva, Ansh Vyas, Wilhelm K. Berger, Laszlo Halasz, Jianshi Yu, Venkatram R. Atigadda, Aja Slay, Kelli R. Goggans, Matthew B. Renfrow, Maureen A. Kane, Laszlo Nagy, Natalia Y. Kedishvili Rexinoids are agonists of nuclear rexinoid X receptors (RXR) that heterodimerize with other nuclear receptors to regulate gene transcription. A number of selective RXR agonists have been developed for clinical use but their application has been hampered by the unwanted side effects associated with the use of rexinoids and a limited understanding of their mechanisms of action across different cell types. Our...

The effect of coronary stent policies on the risk of percutaneous coronary intervention among acute coronary syndrome patients in Shanghai: Real-world evidence
This study aimed to analyze the effect of coronary stent policies implemented in Shanghai on the risk of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) inpatients based on real-world data. MethodsTwo retrospective cohorts of inpatients with a first diagnosis of ACS who had undergone PCI for the first time in the previous year in Shanghai hospitals were examined (one for the postpolicy period and the other for the prepolicy period).χ2 tests were used to compare categorical variables between the two cohorts. Single- and multivariate Cox proportional hazards models were used to compare the risk of ...

Validation of the Italian version of a patient-reported outcome measure for Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia
ConclusionAlthough HSP-SNAP does not investigate non-motor symptoms and we validated only its Italian version, it showed good validity and reliability and it could be used in combination with other objective outcome measures for clinical purposes or as endpoints for future clinical rehabilitation studies. Trial registrationTrial Registration: ClinicalTrial.gov, NCT04256681. Registered 3 February 2020. (Source: PLoS One)

Our perception may not be reality: A longitudinal study of the relationship between perceived and actual change in smoking behavior
DiscussionOur findings highlight the possibility of obtaining different results depending on how changes in tobacco smoking are measured. This highlights the risk of underestimating the actual changes in cigarette smoking during the COVID-19 pandemic, but also more generally when validating public health interventions or smoking cessation programs. Therefore, objective measures such as the actual consumption of psychoactive substances should be utilized, preferably on a longitudinal basis, to mitigate recall bias. (Source: PLoS One)

Predictability of intelligence and age from structural connectomes
In this study, structural images of 1048 healthy subjects from the Human Connectome Project Young Adult study and 94 from ADNI-3 study were processed by an in-house tractography pipeline and analyzed together with pre-processed data of the same subjects from braingraph.org. Whole brain structural connectome features were used to build a simple correlation-based regression machine learning model to predict intelligence and age of healthy subjects. Our results showed that different forms of intelligence as well as age are predictable to a certain degree from diffusion tensor imaging detecting anatomical fiber tracts in the l...

Research on risk management incentive strategy based on the green financial ecosystem
by ZhongPing Cui, Shuang Lu, JinRong Liu Taking the green financial ecosystem composed of innovators, green financial institutions and regulators as the object of research, it explores the issue of how to improve the level of efforts of the three types of subjects and the benefits of risk management in the green financial ecosystem. The optimal level of effort, optimal level of return, and optimal level of return on risk management of green financial ecosystems for innovators, green financial institutions, and regulators under the three modes of No-incentive Contract, Cost-sharing Contract, and Synergistic Cooperation Con...

Evaluating health workers attitude towards implementation of maternal and perinatal deaths surveillance and response system in Morogoro region; analytical cross-sectional study
by Christina Kashililika, Rehema Bakari, Fabiola Moshi Maternal and Perinatal Deaths Review and Surveillance (MPDSR) is a technical system which was issued by the World Health Organization in 2013 to help developing countries improve maternal health. The major purpose of the system was to reduce the ongoing high numbers of maternal deaths and perinata l deaths from avertable causes. Tanzania adopted MPDSR system in 2015. The study aimed to assess health workers attitude towards implementation of MPDSR system in Morogoro Region. This analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in three districts of Morogoro region from ...

Language bias in orthodontic systematic reviews: A meta-epidemiological study
by Samer Mheissen, Loukia M. Spineli, Baraa Daraqel, Ahmad Saleem Alsafadi BackgroundOrthodontic systematic reviews (SRs) include studies published mostly in English than non-English languages. Including only English studies in SRs may result in a language bias. This meta-epidemiological study aimed to evaluate the language bias impact on orthodontic SRs. Data sourceSRs published in high-impact orthodontic journals between 2017 and 2021 were retrieved through an electronic search of PubMed in June 2022. Additionally, Cochrane oral health group was searched for orthodontic systematic reviews published in the same period. Da...

Post-traumatic stress disorder and associated factors among internally displaced persons in Africa: A systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsThe findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis highlight the alarming prevalence of PTSD among IDPs in Africa. Female gender, marital status, number of traumatic events, ill health without medical care, depression, and frequency of displacement were identified as significant risk factors for PTSD. Effective interventions and the development of tailored mental health programs are needed to prevent PTSD among IDPs, focusing on the identified risk factors. (Source: PLoS One)
