Analysis of Platelet Function Testing in Children Receiving Aspirin for Antiplatelet Effects
AbstractAspirin (ASA) remains the most common antiplatelet agent used in children. VerifyNow Aspirin Test ® (VN) assesses platelet response to ASA, with therapeutic effect defined by the manufacturer as ≤ 549 aspirin reaction units (ARU). Single-center, observational, analysis of 195 children (<  18 years-old) who underwent first VN between 2015 and 2020. Primary outcome was proportion of patients with ASA biochemical resistance (>  549 ARU). Secondary outcomes included incidence of new clinical thrombotic and bleeding events during ≤ 6 months from VN in those who received ASA monotherapy (n = ...

Neonatal Outcomes of Critical Congenital Heart Defects: A Multicenter Epidemiological Study of Turkish Neonatal Society
AbstractCritical congenital heart disease (CCHD) is one of the leading causes of neonatal and infant mortality. We aimed to elucidate the epidemiology, spectrum, and outcome of neonatal CCHD in T ürkiye. This was a multicenter epidemiological study of neonates with CCHD conducted from October 2021 to November 2022 at national tertiary health centers. Data from 488 neonatal CCHD patients from nine centers were entered into the Trials-Network online registry system during the study period. Tr ansposition of great arteria was the most common neonatal CHD, accounting for 19.5% of all cases. Sixty-three (12.9%) patients had ex...

Postoperative Morbidity and Interstage Hemodynamics Following Stage I Palliation in Patients with Turner Syndrome and Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome
ConclusionHigh mortality rates are described in TS  + HLHS patients following S1P. In our cohort, despite most surviving more than 30 days post-S1P, long-term survival remained poor. Interstage catheterization data suggest poor physiologic candidacy for subsequent stages of single-ventricle palliation. Understanding the clinical and hemodynamic factors related to poor outcomes in TS + HLHS will help inform management for this population. (Source: Pediatric Cardiology)

Captopril to Lisinopril Conversion in Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Patients Less Than 7  Years of Age (RISE-7)
This study evaluated safety and efficacy of converting from captopril to lisinopril in patients utilizing a pre-defined conversion of 3 mg captopril to 1 mg lisinopril. This was a single center, retrospective study including patients less than 7 years of age admitted for cardi othoracic surgery who received both captopril and lisinopril from 01/01/2017 to 06/01/2022.The primary outcome was mean change in systolic blood pressure (SBP) from baseline for 72 h after conversion of captopril to lisinopril. A total of 99 patients were enrolled. There was a significant decrease in mean SBP (99.12 mmHg vs 94.86 mmHg;p = 0...

The Neonatal QRS Complex and Its Association with Left Ventricular Mass
We present reference values for QRS complex features and their association with LVMI in neonates from a larg e, unselected, population-based cohort. The QRS complex gradually evolved during the first month of life but had a low correlation with LVMI. Our results indicate a poor diagnostic value of using ECG features to identify LVMI outliers in neonates.Trial Registry Copenhagen Baby Heart, NCT02753348,https://clinicaltri-als.gov/ct2/show/NCT02753348?cond=Copenhagen+Baby+Heart&draw=2&rank=1, deidentified individual participant data will not be made available. Cross or Not to Cross-Dilemma of the Pulmonary Arteries
This study represents one of the largest series of patients with criss-cross pulmonary artery anomalies. Our results suggests that it may be more common than previously recognized and potentially overlooked. It is crucial to consider the presence of this anomaly in patients with comple x aortic arch anomalies or cardiac pathologies, as it may have implications for surgical approaches and potential complications. Increased awareness of this anomaly among cardiologists and radiologists is necessary for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. (Source: Pediatric Cardiology)

Current Clinical Profile of Acute Rheumatic Fever and Recurrent Acute Rheumatic Fever in Pakistan
This study aimed to compare clinical profile of patients presenting with first and recurrent episodes of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) using most recent criteria. 130 consecutive patients with ARF were included in the study from August 2019 to March 2022. World Heart Federation standardized echocardiographic criteria were used for cardiac evaluation. The socio-demographic variables, clinical details and relevant investigations were recorded. Median age was 13(6 –26) years. Male to female ratio was 1.6:1. Majority was of low socioeconomic status (90%) and with >  5 family members in a house (83.8%). 27 patients (20.8...

Lung Transplantation for Pulmonary Vascular Disease in Children: A United Network for Organ Sharing Analysis
AbstractPulmonary vascular disease (PVD) represents an important clinical indication for lung transplant (LTx) in infants, children, and adolescents. There is limited information on LTx outcomes in these patients. We explored LTx volumes and post-LTx survival in children with PVD compared to other diagnoses. The UNOS Registry was queried from 1989 to 2020 to identify first-time pediatric LTx recipients (<  18 yo). PVD was categorized as idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) and non-idiopathic arterial hypertension (non-IPAH) and compared to all other patients as other diagnoses. Univariate and multivariate...

Oral Albuterol Treatment in Three Pediatric Patients with Bradycardia: A Novel Therapy
We report three cases of pediatric patients referred for pacemaker implantation for different types of bradycardia, treated at our institution with oral albuterol with therapeutic results that avoided the need for surgical pacemaker implantation at that time. (Source: Pediatric Cardiology)

Minimum Supervision Levels Required for Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Graduation by Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Program Directors
The objective of this study was to determine the minimum LOS required for PC fellows to graduate and compare it with the minimum LOS expected for safe and eff ective practice for the six PC EPAs, from the perspective of the PC Fellowship Program Directors(FPD). All Fellowship Program Directors(FPD) of ACGME-accredited PC fellowships were surveyed through SPIN between April 2017 and August 2017. For each of the PC EPAs, the FPDs were asked to indicate th e minimum LOS expected for graduation and whether they would allow a fellow to graduate if this level was not achieved and the minimum LOS expected for a practicing pedi...

Myocardial Work for Dynamic Monitoring of Myocardial Injury in Neonatal Asphyxia
AbstractTo assess the value of parameters of myocardial work for dynamic monitoring of myocardial injury after neonatal asphyxia. Fifty-three neonates with asphyxia admitted within 24  h after delivery were divided into a mild asphyxia group (n = 40) and severe asphyxia group (n = 13). Echocardiography was performed within 24 h post-birth, within 72 h post-birth (48 h after first echo), and during recovery. The left ventricular ejection fraction on M-mode echocardiography and by Simpson’s biplane method (LVEF and Bi-EF, respectively), stroke volume (SV), cardiac o utput (CO), cardiac index (CI), global longit...
