Amplitude Modulation Perception and Cortical Evoked Potentials in Children With Listening Difficulties and Their Typically Developing Peers
CONCLUSIONS: The observed relationships between AM perception and SiN performance extend the evidence that modulation perception is important for understanding SiN in childhood. In line with this finding, children with LiD demonstrated poorer performance on some measures of AM perception, but their evoked responses implicated a primarily cognitive deficit.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25009103.PMID:38241680 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00317 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Breathing and Speech Adaptation: Do Speakers Adapt Toward a Confederate Talking Under Physical Effort?
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that, in this paradigm, convergence only took place on fo during synchronous speech and that this phonetic adaptation happened independently from any speech breathing adaptation. It also suggests that participants may adapt their quiet breathing while watching a person performing physical exercise but that the mechanism is more complex than that explained previously.PMID:38241692 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00113 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

The Impact of Diglossia on Inflectional Morphological Constructions and Their Relation to Literacy Skills: A Longitudinal Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the impact of diglossia-specific morphological differences (prevalence of the use of the morphological construction in Arabic in SpA vs. StA) on reading and literacy measures, especially the contribution of morphological awareness in SpA, which may provide a stronger basis for StA reading skills. The implications of these results are discussed, especially regarding exposing children to the morphological representations of both the SpA and StA forms to promote reading and literacy in Arabic.PMID:38227435 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00318 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Articulatory and Vocal Fold Movement Patterns During Loud Speech in Children With Cerebral Palsy
CONCLUSIONS: Children with CP differ from their TD peers in the speech motor control of both the oral articulatory and laryngeal subsystems. Both groups alter oral articulatory and vocal fold movements when cued to speak loudly, which may contribute to the increased intelligibility associated with louder speech.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24970302.PMID:38227476 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00411 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Varying Syntax to Enhance Verb-Focused Intervention for 30-Month-Olds With Language Delay: A Concurrent Multiple Baseline Design
CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that learning verbs with high variability of argument roles may facilitate a strong link between lexical representations of verbs and their syntactic structures. Using argument structure variability to teach verbs as an intervention strategy has great potential and should be tested further in larger group studies.PMID:38227485 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00398 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Automated Measures of Syntactic Complexity in Natural Speech Production: Older and Younger Adults as a Case Study
CONCLUSIONS: Syntactic complexity in spontaneous speech can be quantified by directly assessing syntactic structures and considering them in a multivariable manner. It can be derived automatically, saving considerable time and effort compared to manually analyzing large-scale corpora, while maintaining high face validity and robustness.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24964179.PMID:38215342 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00009 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Utility of the Language Use Inventory in Young Children at Elevated Likelihood of Autism
CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide support for the LUI as a feasible, pragmatic language-targeted instrument for inclusion in early developmental evaluations prompted by language concerns. Administration of the LUI may accelerate earlier referral for a comprehensive assessment of ASD symptoms. Given the high correlation with ADOS-2 scores, an LUI total score in a clinical range of concern may encourage a clinician to refer families for a full diagnostic evaluation of ASD.PMID:38215350 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00442 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Variability in Receptive Language Development Following Bilateral Cochlear Implantation
CONCLUSIONS: Congenitally deaf children who were fitted bilaterally in the 1st year of life can develop age-appropriate language skills by the time they start school. The high variability in the data is partly due to the age of implantation, but additional factors such as cognitive factors (e.g., working memory) are likely to influence the variability.PMID:38198368 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00297 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Identifying Spatial Neglect in Chronic Right Hemisphere Stroke Survivors Using the RHDBank Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS: The Apples Test differentiated SN in a group of chronic right hemisphere stroke survivors. Using multiple measures from the CLQT seemed to capture a greater range of problems than clock drawing and paragraph reading tests alone. Therefore, the RHDBank test battery as a whole-and in part the CLQT, Apples Test, and Indented Paragraph Test-can detect certain subtypes of SN in the chronic deficit profile after RHD and is a starting point for diagnostic integration by speech-language pathologists.PMID:38181442 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00285 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

A Tutorial on Skeletal Muscle Metabolism and the Role of Blood Lactate: Implications for Speech Production
CONCLUSION: The role of metabolism during speech (respiratory, laryngeal, and articulatory) is an understudied yet critical aspect of speech physiology that warrants further study to better understand the metabolic systems that are used to meet vocal demands.PMID:38157288 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00531 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)
