The Use of Electronic Health Records for Behavioral Phenotyping of School-Age Children With Unilateral Hearing Loss: A Methodological Approach
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the feasibility of using EHRs in examining UHL in school-age children. By restricting our cohort to individuals who were seen in audiology clinic, we were able to capture variables such as educational difficulty that are not routinely ascertained in medical contexts. The proportion of children in this cohort demonstrating a marker of adverse educational progress is consistent with numerous prior observational studies, thus providing validity to this ascertainment approach. We describe challenges encountered in creating this cohort and detail our hybrid approach to ascertaining key varia...

Revisiting Dysarthria Treatment Across Languages: The Hybrid Approach
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment research on individuals with dysarthria secondary to PD and CP is advancing, but several areas remain to be explored. Next steps are suggested for addressing the paucity and complexity of cross-linguistic speech treatment research.PMID:38056466 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00629 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

A Matter of Time: A Web-Based Investigation of Rest and Sleep Effects on Speech Motor Learning
CONCLUSIONS: A single session of speech motor training promotes observable change to speech production behavior. Specifically, practice facilitates acoustic similarity to the target. Moreover, although a 12-hr postpractice period of rest appears to promote productions that are less variable, only the productions of those who slept are perceived as more accurate by listeners. This may point to sleep's role in contextualizing the acoustic goal of the production to the learner's own vocal tract and its role as a protective mechanism during learning. These results are unaccounted for under existing models and offer potential f...

Substitution Errors and the Role of Markedness in Bilingual Phonological Acquisition
CONCLUSIONS: Through the examination of substitution errors, evidence of between-language interaction and recognition of relative complexity emerged. These results have implications for clinical assessment and diagnosis of speech sound impairments in bilingual children.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL AND PRESENTATION VIDEO: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24640200.PMID:38052067 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00116 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Self-Reported Stuttering Severity Is Accurate: Informing Methods for Large-Scale Data Collection in Stuttering
CONCLUSIONS: Participants were able to accurately rate their stuttering severity during a speech assessment using a simple one-item question. This finding indicates that self-report stuttering severity is a suitable method for large-scale data collection. Findings also support the collection of self-report subjective experience data using questionnaires, such as the OASES, which add vital information about the participants' experience of stuttering that is not captured by overt speech severity ratings alone.PMID:38052068 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00081 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Pitch Variation Skills in Cantonese Speakers With Apraxia of Speech After Stroke: Preliminary Findings of Acoustic Analyses
CONCLUSIONS: The AOS group showed degraded pitch variation skills. The effects of the three linguistic elements were discussed. Future investigations are called for to adapt the TST in other tonal languages to determine if degraded pitch variation skills are present in other tonal language speakers with AOS.PMID:38052075 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00242 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)
