Simulation of Multiple Source Vocalization in the Larynx: How True Folds, False Folds, and Aryepiglottic Folds May Interact
CONCLUSIONS: Closely spaced sound sources in the larynx are highly interactive. They appear to entrain to the source that has the combined advantage of small cross-sectional glottal area and proximity to a downstream vocal tract that supports oscillation with acoustic inertance.PMID:38416067 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00503 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Mean Length of Utterance in Czech Toddlers: Validity Estimates and Comparison of Words, Morphemes, and Syllables
CONCLUSION: MLUw based on all utterances was confirmed as a valid measure of early language skills in Czech, as it is stable in time and shows concurrent and predictive relations with other transcript-based and test-based measures.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25215203.PMID:38416073 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00251 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Ethically Responsible Participant Selection in Research: A Viewpoint
CONCLUSIONS: Inequities at the level of participants' selection result in discrepant access to clinical services and evidence-based research for multilingual individuals; neurodiverse individuals; and Black, Indigenous, and people of color communities. ASHA and researchers alike can show commitment to DEI by addressing this problem from multiple approaches.PMID:38407070 | DOI:10.1044/2024_JSLHR-23-00567 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Parental Responsivity and Child Communication During Mother-Child and Father-Child Interactions in Fragile X Syndrome
CONCLUSION: Overall, this study provides evidence that interventions focused on increasing parental responsiveness would be beneficial for families of children with FXS and that these interventions should be delivered early given the association between responsivity and child age.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.25229939.PMID:38407074 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00517 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Processing of Plural Marking in Nouns by German-Speaking Children With Normal Hearing and Children With Cochlear Implants: An Eye-Tracking Study
CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that early implantation seems to be beneficial for the acquisition of plural as indicated by very small between-group differences in processing and comprehension. Processing is furthermore affected by the type of material (i.e., phonetic, phonological, or morphological) used to mark plural and less so by their segmental salience. Our study emphasizes the need to take into account the form of the linguistic material in future investigations at higher levels of processing.PMID:38407093 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00145 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Orthographic Learning in French-Speaking Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children
CONCLUSIONS: Both groups created sufficiently detailed orthographic representations to complete the tasks, which support the self-teaching hypothesis. DHH children used phonological information in both tasks but could use more orthographic cues than TH children to build up orthographic representations. Using the combination of a spelling task and a recognition task, as well as analyzing the nature of errors, in this study, provides a methodological implication for further understanding of underlying cognitive processes.PMID:38394239 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00324 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Listening Preference for Child-Directed Speech Versus Time-Reversed Speech in Moderate-Preterm Infants Compared to Full-Term Infants
CONCLUSIONS: The lack of preference for CDS over backward speech in the MPIs group suggests delayed developmental pattern of speech processing compared to full-term peers. Delays in neurological maturation as well as listening experience in an unregulated environment outside the uterus during a sensitive period of brain development may affect the recognition of phonological and prosodic patterns that support listening preference for speech over backward speech.PMID:38394254 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00040 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)
