Children's Command of Four Inflectional Constructions in Arabic: Differences and Development With Age
CONCLUSIONS: This study contributes to our knowledge about early language development by showing that the acquisition of gender and number-plurals is faster and more advanced than the acquisition of possessive pronouns or tense. The implications of these results are discussed, especially the need to develop children's inflectional forms such as possessive pronouns and tense, which may eventually also impact narrative understanding and production.PMID:37934887 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00153 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Perceptions of Adults With Hearing Loss About the Communication Difficulties Generated by the COVID-19 Preventive Measures: A Qualitative Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study identified reduced access to speech reading and lack of general awareness about hearing issues as key barriers to communication during the pandemic. The decreased communication capabilities were perceived to be most problematic at work and during health appointments, and tended to cause frustration, anxiety, self-esteem issues, and social isolation. Suggestions are outlined for current and future public health measures to better consider the experience of people with hearing loss.PMID:37934877 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00163 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Associations Between Age-Related Hearing Loss, Cognitive Impairment, and Multiple Chronic Conditions in a Group Care Setting
CONCLUSIONS: The results are largely consistent with associations reported in epidemiological studies that include age-related hearing loss. Of particular interest in this study is the LCA that suggested that all of the profiles associated with a high likelihood of hearing loss included a high risk of depression. The co-occurrence of these two factors highlights the need to identify and treat hearing loss in older adults, especially as part of the treatment plan for individuals with depressive symptoms.PMID:37934882 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00067 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Modulating Complex Sentence Processing in Aphasia Through Attention and Semantic Networks
CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that attention and semantic activation are parameters that may be manipulated to strengthen encoding of lexical representations to facilitate retrieval (i.e., dependency linking) and mitigate similarity-based interference. In IWAs, these manipulations may help to reduce lexical processing deficits that can preclude successful encoding.PMID:37934886 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00298 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Unique Patterns of Bilingual Speech: Factors Affecting Disfluency Rates in Russian-Hebrew Bilingual Children
CONCLUSIONS: Bilingual disfluency criteria are needed, since based on the existing monolingual criteria, some children might be erroneously assessed as children who stutter, thus leading to overdiagnosis. The results support the claim that proficiency is an important factor in the production of disfluencies.PMID:37931116 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00048 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

The Impact of Modifiable Preoral Factors on Swallowing and Nutritional Outcomes in Healthy Adults: A Scoping Review
CONCLUSIONS: This review supports the influence of preoral factors on swallowing and nutritional outcomes. However, there is a large emphasis on the visual modality and on nutritional outcomes. Nearly none of the literature found in this review directly measured swallowing safety, efficiency, or physiology. Future work will benefit from a larger focus on proprioceptive preoral factors as they relate to swallowing outcomes.PMID:37931134 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00062 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Automating Intended Target Identification for Paraphasias in Discourse Using a Large Language Model
CONCLUSIONS: We were able to automatically identify the intended target of paraphasias in discourse using just the surrounding language about half of the time. These findings take us a step closer to automatic aphasic discourse analysis. In future work, we will incorporate phonological information from the paraphasia to further improve predictive utility.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.24463543.PMID:37931137 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00121 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Activation During Unscripted Discourse in People With Poststroke Aphasia
Conclusions: We describe a new tool for assessing discourse recovery in PWA. By demonstrating the feasibility of a natural language paradigm in patients with chronic, poststroke aphasia, we open a new area for future research.PMID:37917918 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00124 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)

Sex Differences in Velopharyngeal Anatomy of 9- and 10-Year-Old Children
CONCLUSIONS: Results suggest the presence of sexual dimorphism in the VP mechanism among 9- and 10-year-old children. These findings emphasize the necessity of using different normative data for males and females when making comparisons to patients with cleft palate.PMID:37902502 | DOI:10.1044/2023_JSLHR-23-00279 (Source: Journal of speech, language, and hearing research : JSLHR)
