“This is not a Drill—Evacuate the Building Now!”: Disaster Preparedness at the Outpatient Surgery Department: An Experiential Lesson
This article describes an actual disaster that took place at an outpatient surgical center. Reported are the context of the disaster, the potential dangers, the unprepared reactions of the staff, and the following leadership shown by the staff nurses and clinical nurse specialist in response to the disaster. Patient and Parent Engagement in Preoperative Telephone Call for Efficiency in Elective Surgery
Discussion
As each hour in the OR is billed at approximately $3,000, implementation of this modified preoperative telephone call significantly improved operational efficiency with $0 cost to the organization. The number of late cases was decreased, and the time saved was surprisingly compelling. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing)

Relationship Between Preoperative Time of Fasting and Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting
The study, conducted in Turkey, explored preoperative fasting in children and post operative complications. The design was prospective, comparative and descriptive. Children (n=82) between 7 and 18 who underwent general anesthesia and who, along with their parents, consented/assented, were included. The researchers note that fasting after midnight, the common practice, often resulted in very long fasting periods in children operated upon as the surgical day progressed. The length of time the child fasted was correlated with presence or absence of post operative nausea and vomiting using the Baxter BARF Scale. The findings ...

Using GoFundMe to Obtain Medical Care: The New Repair for Hypoplastic Left Heart Now Available to Buy
Advancements in surgical interventions, specifically the newer biventricular valve replacement, for babies born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome have increased the survival rate of this otherwise fatal congenital deformity. For those interested in surgical intervention, patients are lucky to have this option, although not all babies are candidates for this surgery. Survival rates must remain only a part of the conversation, as there are significant lifelong medical needs/risks for these babies, including neurologic and developmental disabilities. Medical factors are only part of the story. The out-of-pocket costs for t...
