Getting Everyone in the Same Room: The Combined Therapist Approach to Teaching Independence in Clean Intermittent Catheterization
Discussion Despite longer session duration and scheduling constraints, the combined therapist approach was more efficient and effective for this category of patients, with fewer return sessions needed to achieve the desired outcome. We recommend early identification and referral of appropriate patients for a combined therapy clinic. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing)

Acute Appendicitis After Umbilical Cord Blood Transplant: A Case Report
Acute appendicitis is a common pediatric surgical problem. Management of acute appendicitis in immunocompromised children is a clinical challenge. This case study discusses the management of acute appendicitis with a laparoscopic appendectomy in a 13-year-old male 21 days after unrelated umbilical cord blood transplant with urgent laparoscopic appendectomy without complication. Assessing Clinical Utility of Cerebral Oximetry Monitoring During Pediatric Scoliosis Surgery: A Pilot Project
Discussion The results support the continued use of NIRS monitoring during pediatric scoliosis surgery. Analysis of individual CDEs reveals that some patients may incur more prolonged and significant CDEs. In addition, cerebral desaturations are difficult to predict using solely blood pressure parameters. Device ease of use, availability, and a high perception of clinical utility among anesthesia providers support adoption of the monitor in this setting. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing)

Escalator Injuries in the Pediatric Population: A Case Study
Conclusion The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has published a general interest in safety brochure on escalator injuries; however, it has not reconsidered mandatory standards (accessed on November 11, 2016). By enforcing safety behaviors within the community, there is a potential decrease in the incidence of injuries and, subsequently, hospitalizations. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing)

Innovation in Patient Care
This study further builds on previous work started in 2013 where we found that patients were taking far less opioids for pain than had been prescribed. This resulted in standardizing the amount of opioids prescribed in this patient population to five doses. PURPOSE The purpose of the study will be to describe pain control in the pediatric postoperative nonperforated appendectomy population after discharge from the hospital. Our hope is that we can show adequate pain control in this patient population, specifically using nonopioid modalities for pain control including acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Diagnosis, Surgical Management, and Postoperative Care for the Neonate With Sacrococcygeal Teratoma
Abstract Summary Background Neonatal sacrococcygeal teratoma is rare occurring in approximately one in 35,000 live births with a female predominance (3:1–4:1 ratio). It is an unusual tumor that develops before birth and arises from embryologically multipotent cells from the Hensen node, which is located in the coccyx. Sacrococcygeal teratomas generally present in two distinct fashions: newborns with large predominately external masses, which are noted in utero or at the time of delivery and are rarely malignant, and older infants and young children presenting with tumors predominately confined to the pelvis with a mu...

Advanced Practice Nurse Phone Follow-Up Initiative to Reduce Unplanned Returns for Perforated Appendicitis Patients
Introduction: Perforated appendicitis is a high-volume diagnosis managed by advanced practice nurses (APNs) in the general pediatric surgery department at an urban hospital in the northeast. This APN-led quality improvement project aimed to determine the impact of APN phone follow-up to prevent unplanned return visits and readmission. Methods: Before June 2015, all patients with perforated appendicitis discharged home on antibiotic therapy were provided with APN phone follow-up. The patients were followed for 30-day outcomes regarding unplanned returns to care. The goal was to attempt to identify patients at a higher ...
