Medication Safety and the Accidental Death of a 9-Month-Old
Since the turn of the century, there has been a 225% increase in the number of deaths of children under 5 years old caused by opioid poisoning because of accidental ingestion. One measure aimed at reducing this trend, currently being considered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is increasing the safety of opioid use by requiring unit-dose packaging. Another classic measure is educational efforts around medication safety and children. A Refugee Child With Lead Poisoning
A case study is presented of a refugee family and children presenting to the refugee clinic, with a positive result for lead toxicity. Clinical presentation and management of pediatric lead toxicity is discussed, and a literature review of refugee screening procedures for the state of California is examined, emphasizing the importance of continuity of care, case management, community resource utilization, and trauma-informed care. A Venous Mesenteric Ischemia Revealing a Protein C Deficiency
In this case, we reported a 9-year-old girl who presented with a superior mesenteric venous thrombosis secondary to Protein C deficiency. This condition of venous thrombosis secondary to Protein C deficiency is rare. Symptoms are not specific and may include vomiting, nausea, and abdominal pain. The article describes the case of a familial disorder. Treatment included anticoagulation to prevent further thrombotic events and a resection of the necrotic bowel segment.
