The Effect of Preoperative Training and Therapeutic Play on Children’s Anxiety, Fear, and Pain
This study is a quasi-experimental and cross-sectional research. Three hundred children aged 7–12 years and suitable for the research criteria, referred to two pediatric hospitals in the northern region of Turkey for surgery, are the sample of the study. Each group (control group, training group, and training + play group) was composed of 100 children (N = 300). The experimental (training and training + play) groups were administered training and play activities on the operation day before undergoing surgery. Partnering With Patients and Families to Reduce Central-Line-Associated Blood Stream Infections in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Patients
Abstract: Central-line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs) are potentially life threatening and a source of added medical costs and morbidity among pediatric hematology/oncology patients. As a quality improvement project to reduce CLABSI among pediatric hematology/oncology patients, our interdisciplinary care team collaborated with patients and families to create an educational brochure providing essential information about central lines, CLABSI contributing factors, and ways to reduce CLABSI risk. Information about benefits of central lines, risks and contributing factors of CLABSI, and appropriate central line c...

Hypnosis for Postoperative Pain Management of Thoracoscopic Approach to Repair Pectus Excavatum: Retrospective Analysis
Discussion: The results of this retrospective study suggest that self-hypnosis provides an opioid-sparing effect for managing moderate-to-severe pediatric postoperative pain after Nuss procedure. Further clinical studies are needed to validate the effectiveness of self-hypnosis for symptom management after painful pediatric surgical procedures. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing)

After the ABCs: The Importance of Psychological Screening for Children and Parents After a Traumatic Event
Background: The effects of trauma do not end after resuscitation. The Screening Tool for Early Predictors of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (STEPP) is validated for pediatric trauma victims and their parents. This would help identifying children and caregivers at risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and highlight mechanisms of trauma that increase risk. Methods: A retrospective review of 142 children and parents admitted to a Level I pediatric trauma center was completed. Variables of age, gender, injury severity score, and mechanism of injury were compared by Student’s t test for normally distributed independen...
