Development of the Center for Pectus Excavatum and Carinatum
Abstract: Pectus deformities are a common diagnosis in the pediatric surgical population. In light of the high volume of pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum patients we treat at our institution, we developed a specialty center for streamlined care of these patients. The development and implementation of our Center offered challenges and obstacles, but our Center's presence has offered positive patient outcomes as well as increased quality of care. It is our hope that sharing our journey in this accomplishment will afford other institutions ease in similar developments. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing)

Atlanto-occipital Dislocation: Internal Decapitation
Abstract: An atlanto-occipital dislocation, also referred to as internal decapitation, was once thought to be a universally fatal injury as it occurs when the skull separates from the spinal column as a result of ligamentous injury. This publication follows the course of a 3 year old female who experienced an atlanto-occipital dislocation from injury to follow-up. Current imaging and diagnostics are discussed along with criteria for diagnosis and recommended treatment. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgical Nursing)

Evaluating the Efficacy and Safety of Epidural Analgesia for Postoperative Pain Management in Neonates/Infants Undergoing Abdominal or Thoracic Surgery
This study was a nonexperimental, descriptive, retrospective design conducted in the newborn/infant intensive care unit at an urban quaternary care pediatric hospital. Subjects were neonates/infants 0–12 months admitted after abdominal or thoracic surgery with an epidural for postoperative pain management. Results: Ninety-four neonates/infants were identified. Patients received a continuous intravenous opioid, in addition to the epidural, 45% of the time. There was no statistically significant correlation of the addition of a continuous opioid infusion with gender (p = .83), gestational age (p = .59), or race (p = .98). ...
