Three-dimensional imaging and molecular analysis of the effects of photobiomodulation and mechanical vibration on orthodontic retention treatment in rats
ConclusionPBM and HFMV might be able to support retention after orthodontic tooth movement by reducing bone resorption and increasing bone quality. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Perception of dental students towards case-based orthodontic education
ConclusionsOrthodontic case-based education was well received by final year dental students. The most noted improvement was observed in motivation, ability to comment on the diagnosis and treatment planning of orthodontic cases, without feeling an extra workload. Effects of histamine and various histamine receptor antagonists on gene expression profiles of macrophages during compressive strain
ConclusionsHistamine has an impact on the gene expression profile of macrophages during compressive strain in vitro, most likely having an impairing effect on orthodontic tooth movement by upregulation of osteoprotegerin expression. Soft tissue evaluation after maxillary protraction with RPE or with the ALT-RAMEC protocol
ConclusionBoth treatment protocols improved the soft tissue profile due to a  forward movement of the midface and the upper lip, and a backward movement of the lower lip and chin, compared to the control group. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Low-level laser therapy, piezocision, or their combination vs. conventional treatment for orthodontic tooth movement
ConclusionAll three  methods accelerated OTM, with the combination of LLLT + piezocision producing the strongest and LLLT producing the weakest acceleration. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Effects of maxillary expansion and protraction on pharyngeal airway dimensions in relation to changes in head posture and hyoid position
ConclusionWhile expansion and FM treatment did not affect the head posture and hyoid bone position, positive effects were observed in the hypopharyngeal airway region. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Effects of offset design on the accuracy of bracket placement with a  guided bonding device
ConclusionsOffset designs influenced the precision of vertical bracket placement with GBDs. Due to the smaller deviations in angulation and rotation of bracket placement, TF is preferred over EF for GBDs. Moreover, the differences between TF and EF also need to be considered in the design of other dental CAD/CAM devices. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Impacts of childhood malocclusion on the family
ConclusionsThe child ’s malocclusion influenced the family, primarily parental emotions. Family influences were mostly determined by parental perception of the child’s altered psychosocial well-being. The FIS had adequate psychometric properties. A  novel machine learning model for class III surgery decision
ConclusionsRF and LR machine learning models can be used to generate accurate and reliable algorithms to successfully classify patients up to 90%. The features selected by the algorithms coincide with the clinical features that we as clinicians weigh heavily when determining a  treatment plan. This study further supports that overjet, Wits appraisal, lower incisor angulation, and Holdaway H angle can be used as strong predictors in assessing a patient’s surgical needs. Three-dimensional mandibular characteristics in skeletal malocclusion
ConclusionWhen analysing 3D data for treatment planning of adult patients, the orthodontist should pay attention to angular and volumetric characteristics of the mandible to identify extreme skeletal sagittal or vertical malocclusions. Effect of micro-osteoperforations (MOPs) on the rate of en  masse orthodontic tooth retraction
ConclusionsThe use of MOPs is effective in increasing the rate of en  masse tooth retraction in both the maxillary and the mandibular arch. The rate of tooth movement was greater even in the post-MOP period as compared to the control group. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Effective approach for improving a  gummy smile
ConclusionsTreatment involving the combined use of miniscrews and a  modified transpalatal arch resulted in intrusion of the maxillary first molars and maxillary incisors and consequently elevated the maxillary occlusal plane. The results of this study suggest that intruding the maxillary occlusal plane and minimizing mandibular molar extrusion were effective to in duce autorotation of the mandible and to improve a gummy smile.
