Dynamic force decay evaluation of latex and non-latex orthodontic elastics
ConclusionLatex elastics retained significantly more force over time than their non-latex equivalents. Because of the higher force decay in a  dynamic environment, it is important that non-latex elastics be changed more frequently. Customized lingual brackets vs. conventional labial brackets for initial alignment
ConclusionIn this pilot study, no differences between the two treatment approaches could be detected for the phase of initial mandibular alignment. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Assessment of salivary stress and pain biomarkers and their relation to self-reported pain intensity during orthodontic tooth movement: a  longitudinal and prospective study
ConclusionsThe stress of starting orthodontic treatment increased sAA levels more than the pain that was experienced during orthodontic tooth movement. Being male was a  predictor of higher sAA concentrations. Orthodontic tooth movement did not cause significant alterations in salivary pain and stress biomarkers. Quality of orthodontic care —A multicenter cohort study in Germany
ConclusionThe improvement rate among this selected German cohort indicated an overall very good standard of orthodontic treatment. Staff experience proved to be a  predictive factor for high-quality results. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Effect of four premolar extractions on the vertical dimension of the face
ConclusionOrthodontic treatment of children with skeletal hyperdivergence using systematic extraction of four premolars had minimal effects on the vertical facial dimension compared to non-extraction treatment. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Periodontal health of unilateral labially vs. palatally impacted maxillary canines erupted by closed eruption technique
ConclusionThe decrease in KGW, AGW, and GT was not associated with the pre-eruptive position of the impacted teeth. These side effects seen after orthodontic treatment of impacted teeth should be followed carefully in the long term. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Multiheaded mandibular condyles
ConclusionsThe prevalence of MHC was 5.84% in our proband, which is higher than in previous studies. There was no statistically significant difference between the prevalence of MHC in males or females. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Oral health-related quality of life in patients with cleft lip and/or palate or Robin sequence
ConclusionThe occurrence of a craniofacial malformation impacted the OHRQoL especially in older and male affected patients, unrelated to the expression level or localization. An early instruction about oral health, rehabilitation and functional training should be considered in therapy. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Antibacterial properties and abrasion-stability: Development of a novel silver-compound material for orthodontic bracket application
ConclusionA  promising, novel silver-infiltrated abrasion-stable material for use as orthodontic brackets, which also exhibit strong antibacterial properties on in situ grown oral biofilms, was developed. The strong antibacterial properties were maintained even after surface abrasion simulated with long-term t oothbrushing. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Soft tissue changes with skeletal anchorage in comparison to conventional anchorage protocols in the treatment of bimaxillary proclination patients treated with premolar extraction
ConclusionsThe overall existing evidence regarding the effect of anchorage protocols on soft tissue changes in patients with bimaxillary protrusion and premolar extraction treatment plans is of low quality. Anatomical and immunohistochemical analyses of the fusion of the premaxillary –maxillary suture in human fetuses
ConclusionPremature fusion of the PMS in the labial region during the human fetal period may be associated with maxillary deficiency, which is related to a  class III malocclusion. Overall, the similar expression patterns of TGF-β1, TGF-β3 and fibulin ‑1 suggested a close relationship between these factors in regulating the development of the PMS. Biomechanical model registration for monitoring and simulating large orthodontic tooth movements in the maxilla and mandible
ConclusionEFM allows accurate OTM quantification relative to the maxillary and mandibular bases even in challenging situations involving large OTM. Superimposition of malocclusion and setup models enables realistic simulation of final tooth positions. This may greatly enhance the value of digital setups for decision-making in orthodontic treatment planning. (Source: Journal of Orofacial Orthopedics/Fortschritte der Kieferorthopadie)

Evaluation ´ of mandibular alveolar bone in patients with different vertical facial patterns
ConclusionsThe patients with different VFPs did not exhibit significant differences in the trabecular complexity of the mandibular alveolus. Hypodivergent patients tend to have thicker trabecular and alveolar bone widths than normodivergent and hyperdivergent individuals.
