Role of Endobronchial Ultrasound-guided Transbronchial Needle Aspiration in the Diagnosis and Management of Mediastinal Cyst
Conclusion: Diagnostic and therapeutic yield of EBUS-TBNA for mediastinal cysts is limited and surgical resection remains the treatment of choice. (Source: Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology)

Predictors of Intraprocedural Respiratory Bronchoscopy Complications
Purpose: Sleep apnea can increase adverse outcomes during ambulatory surgery but not during gastrointestinal endoscopy. We hypothesize that STOP-BANG is associated with intraprocedural bronchoscopy respiratory complications. Methods: Consecutive patients undergoing bronchoscopy under moderate sedation were prospectively administered the STOP-BANG questionnaire. Participants were assessed for intraprocedural complications including hypoxemia (oxygen saturation≤85%), bradypnea (respiratory rate (Source: Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology)

Combined Thoracoscopic Surgical Stapling and Endobronchial Valve Placement For Lung Volume Reduction With Incomplete Lobar Fissures: An Experimental Pilot Animal Study
Conclusion: Combined minimally invasive VATS fissure stapling with bronchoscopic valve placement to induce lobar atelectasis appears safe and feasible in the swine model. Future research in humans using a combined procedure is needed to confirm safety and clinical efficacy. (Source: Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology)

The Diagnostic Accuracy and Sensitivity for Malignancy of Radial-Endobronchial Ultrasound and Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy for Sampling of Peripheral Pulmonary Lesions: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
The objective of this study was to determine the comparative diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, and negative predictive value for R-EBUS and ENB in sampling PPLs. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted. The Ovid Medline database was queried for original research reporting a diagnostic yield of R-EBUS or ENB for PPLs identified on computed tomography chest suspicious for malignancy. The I2 statistic assessed study heterogeneity. Random effects models produced pooled estimates of diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity for malignancy. Reasons for heterogeneity were explored with meta-regression. Publicat...

A Prospective Outcome Assessment After Bronchoscopic Interventions for Malignant Central Airway Obstruction
Conclusion: Various therapeutic bronchoscopic interventions, including combined modalities, provide rapid and sustained improvements in symptoms, respiratory status, exercise capacity, and quality of life in malignant CAO and have a good safety profile. Predictors of Indwelling Pleural Catheter Removal and Infection: A Single-center Experience With 336 Procedures
Background: Indwelling pleural catheters (IPCs) offer ambulatory management of symptomatic persistent pleural effusions, but their widespread use is somewhat hampered by the risk of pleural infection and the inconvenience of carrying a catheter for a prolonged period of time. Factors associated with these 2 limitations were analyzed in this study. Methods: Retrospective review of consecutive patients who had undergone IPC placement over a 5 ½-year period. Time to IPC removal was analyzed with the Fine and Gray competing risks survival model, with competing risk being death. A binary logistic regression method was use...

Patient-controlled Sedation During Flexible Bronchoscopy: A Randomized Controlled Trial
This study hypothesized that PCS with propofol during FB would facilitate early recovery, with similar bronchoscopist and patient satisfaction compared with nurse-controlled sedation (NCS) with midazolam. A total of 150 patients were randomized 1:1:1 into a control group (premedication with morphine-scopolamine and NCS with midazolam), PCS-MS group (premedication with morphine-scopolamine and PCS with propofol), and PCS-G group (premedication with glycopyrronium and PCS with propofol). Results: The procedures included transbronchial biopsy, transbronchial needle aspiration, cryotherapy/biopsy, and/or multistation endobr...
