Abnormal Pulmonary Function Testing as an Independent Risk Factor for Procedural Complications During Transthoracic Needle Biopsies
Conclusion: In addition to previous well-described characteristics, we described physiological data (abnormal PFTs), imaging findings, and nodule location as risk factors of procedural complications. Obtaining preprocedural PFT, in addition to reviewing CT imaging and demographic data, may aid clinicians in better risk stratifying patients undergoing transthoracic needle biopsies. Complications of Endobronchial Valve Placement for Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction: Insights From the Food and Drug Administration Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE)
Conclusion: Pneumothorax is the most-reported complication for BLVR with EBV placement, and in 65% of cases, pneumothorax is managed without removing valves. Importantly, 14 deaths were reported during that timeframe. Further studies are needed to estimate the true magnitude of the complications associated with BLVR. Risk Factors for Pneumothorax Development Following CT-Guided Core Lung Nodule Biopsy
This study aims to correlate nodule, patient, and technical risk factors less commonly investigated in the literature with pneumothorax development during computed tomography-guided core needle lung nodule biopsy. Patients and Methods: Retrospective data on 671 computed tomography-guided percutaneous core needle lung biopsies from 671 patients at a tertiary care center between March 2014 and August 2016. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were used to identify pneumothorax risk factors. Results: The overall incidence of pneumothorax was 26.7% (n=179). Risk factors identified on univaria...

Rapid On-site Evaluation and Final Cytologic Diagnoses Correlation During Endobronchial Ultrasonography
Background: The cost-effectiveness and low rate of inadequate sampling with the use of rapid on-site evaluation (ROSE) along with endobronchial ultrasonography (EBUS) is well established. Our aim in this study was to evaluate the correlation of ROSE during EBUS and final cytologic diagnosis and also to see if ROSE might predict the subtype of lung cancer. Patients and Methods: All consecutive subjects who attended our clinic between January 2016 and January 2019 for the evaluation of pathologic mediastinal and/or hilar lymph nodes (LNs)/mass using EBUS were enrolled into our prospective study. ROSE was performed...

Bronchoscopy in Critically Ill COVID-19 Patients: Findings, Microbiological Profile, and Coinfection
Background: Bronchoscopy is a widely use technique in critically ill patients. Nosocomial coinfections are a cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care units. Objectives: Our aim was to describe bronchoscopy findings and analyze microbiological profile and probably coinfection through bronchial aspirate (BA) samples in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 pneumonia requiring intensive care unit admission. Methods: Retrospective observational study analyzing the BA samples collected from intubated patients with coronavirus disease 2019 in a referral Hospital (Spain). Results: One hundred f...

Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) for the Management of Hepatic Hydrothorax: The Known and the Unknown
Conclusion: The current management options for the refractory pleural effusion in HH include repeated thoracenteses, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, surgical repair of defects in the diaphragm, and liver transplantation. However, the cost, eligibility, and availability can be some of the major concerns with these treatment modalities. With this meta-analysis, we conclude that IPCs can provide an alternative therapeutic option for spontaneous pleurodesis. (Source: Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology)

A Direct Comparative Study of Bronchoscopic Navigation Planning Platforms for Peripheral Lung Navigation: The ATLAS Study
Conclusion: Comparing PLN planning software revealed significant differences in the generation of virtual airway and navigation maps. These differences may play an unrecognized role in the accurate PLN and biopsy of PPL. Further prospective trials are needed to quantify the effect of the differences reported. Learning Curves for Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy Using CUSUM Analysis
Conclusion: Operators achieve competences in ENB at different paces. This must be taken in account when beginners start to learn the procedure. There is a huge need for a structured educational program and a validated test to determine competences. (Source: Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology)
