General purpose propofol target-controlled infusion using the marsh model with adjusted weight input
We report a simple method for adjusting the weight input of the Marsh target-controlled infusion (TCI) model such that the resulting infusion regime closely mimics the behaviour of the Eleveld model, thereby making the Marsh model more precise for patients at the extremes of age and body mass index. To assess the performance of our method, we simulated 2768 subjects with diverse combinations of age, weight, height and sex undergoing a hypothetical four-hour propofol TCI using both the Marsh model with our weight adjustment and the Eleveld model. The weight adjusted Marsh model produced infusion regimes and corresponding ef...

Fixing the anesthesia research crisis in Japan
AbstractTo explore the current status of anesthesia research activity in Japan, we analyzed the number of abstracts presented at the Japanese Society of Anesthesiologists (JSA) annual meetings by several factors including gender, society branches, and subspecialty categories. The number of abstracts at JSA annual meetings has declined sharply since 2016 with no gender gap. A decrease in the neurological field predated the overall decline, but other subspecialty categories showed a similar decline. Although the Tokyo, Tokai-Hokuriku, and Kyushu branches were responsible for more than half of the reduction, the trend was sim...

Association between smoking and central sensitization pain: a web-based cross-sectional study
ConclusionSmoking is an independent risk factor for CSS. This indicates that smoking may be an important factor in the management of central pain disorders. (Source: Journal of Anesthesia)

Evaluation of pulse oximeter at the nasal septum during general anesthesia: comparison with finger oximeter
ConclusionsConsidering the higher stability to hypothermia with a similar accuracy, nasal septum pulse oximetry may be an attractive alternative to finger pulse oximetry.Trail registration This study was registered with Clinical Research Information Service (CRIS:https://cris.nih.go.kr/cris/en/; ref: KCT0008352). Incidence of sodium –glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor-associated perioperative ketoacidosis in surgical patients: a prospective cohort study
ConclusionsThe observed incidence of SAPKA in our general surgical population was lower than expected. However, given that the study was observational in nature, interpretation of study results warrants careful considerations for biases. (Source: Journal of Anesthesia)

The combination of hydrogen gas and hydrogen-rich solution does not protect against ischemic spinal cord injury in rabbits
ConclusionThese results suggest that the combination of 1.2% H2 gas inhalation and administration of a hydrogen-rich solution does not protect against ischemic spinal cord injury and that the increase in H2 concentration in spinal cord tissue after administration of HS is very low compared to 1.2% H2 gas inhalation. Anatomic evaluation to compare the dye spread with ultrasound-guided pericapsular nerve group (PENG) injection with or without an additional suprainguinal fascia iliaca (SIFI) injection in soft embalmed cadavers
ConclusionThe study findings indicate that combined PENG  + SIFI injections lead to an extensive craniocaudal and longitudinal spread along the iliacus muscle. We perceive that the combination of these two injections will have a superior clinical outcome. (Source: Journal of Anesthesia)
