Association between preoperative neutrophil –lymphocyte ratio, uric acid, and postoperative delirium in elderly patients undergoing degenerative spine surgery
ConclusionOur results demonstrated that in elderly patients undergoing degenerative spine surgery, the preoperative NLR was not significantly associated with POD, but a lower preoperative uric acid value was an independent risk factor for developing POD. Uric acid could have a neuroprotective impact on POD in patients with degenerative spine diseases. (Source: Journal of Anesthesia)

Postoperative outcomes of pediatric patients with perioperative COVID-19 infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies
ConclusionPerioperative COVID-19 infection was strongly associated with increased risk of PPCs, but it did not increase the risk of postoperative early mortality, the rate of postoperative ICU admission, and the length of hospital stay in pediatric patients. Our preplanned sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of our study findings. (Source: Journal of Anesthesia)

Ultrasound evaluation of gastric emptying of high-energy semifluid solid beverage in parturients during labor at term: a randomized controlled trial
ConclusionThe change of gastric antral cross-sectional area after HESSB is similar to the corresponding calories and volume of CHO and the gastric emptying of HESSB can be emptied within 2  h with better taste satisfaction and satiety in pregnant women under labor analgesia. Updated review on the use of neuromuscular blockade during intraoperative motor-evoked potential monitoring in the modern anesthesia era
AbstractTranscranial electrical stimulation motor-evoked potentials (Tc-MEP) monitoring is a common practice in neurosurgery to prevent postoperative neurological damage. However, the use of neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) during Tc-MEP monitoring is a subject of controversy. In addition, the effectiveness of sugammadex, a selective reversal agent, in the context of Tc-MEP monitoring requires further investigation. This review aimed to clarify the considerations involved in achieving optimal Tc-MEP monitoring while ensuring patient safety. Preoperative patient selection, comorbidity assessment, motor power evaluation...

Transcutaneous carbon dioxide measurements in anesthetized apneic patients with BMI   & gt;  35 kg/m2
AbstractTranscutaneous carbon dioxide measurement (TcCO2) offers the ability to continuously and non-invasively monitor carbon dioxide (CO2) tensions when end-tidal monitoring is not possible. The accuracy of TcCO2 has not been established in anesthetized apneic patients with obesity. In this secondary publication, we present a methods comparison analysis of TcCO2 with the gold standard arterial PCO2, in adult patients with body mass index (BMI)  >  35kg/m2 who were randomized to receive high flow or low flow nasal oxygenation during post-induction apnea. Agreement between PaCO2 and TcCO2 at baseline, the start of a...
